Singer Killed In Florida Performed In Baltimore Last Year

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Fans of "The Voice" star Christina Grimmie are still mourning after she was gunned down in Florida. The 22-year-old singer performed in Baltimore just last year.

Rick Ritter has more on the New Jersey native's lasting impact and the search for a possible motive in the shooting.

Grimmie was wowing people for years---even right here in Baltimore. Friday night, Grimmie, a star on season six of "The Voice," was gunned down after performing a concert at Plaza Live in Orlando. Police say the suspect posed as a fan, walked up to Grimmie and shot her.

"She was doing a meet and greet, signing autographs and selling merchandise," a police official said.

Witnesses say Grimmie's brother tackled the gunman. The suspect then turned the gun on himself.

"We don't know if they were friends or just a crazy fan that followed her on Twitter or social media," the police official said.

Grimmie, a south Jersey native, gave a touching performance at the Ed Block Courage Awards in Baltimore just last year.

"It was really hard hearing the news that we lost Christina," said Will Pateris, Ed Block Courage Award Foundation.

Pateris helped get Grimmie involved in the event, something he says she was thrilled to be a part of. She performed the song "Heroes."

"Not only did she perform but she took part with the outreach of the kids and I think that was the biggest part for her," Pateris said.

A lasting impact that has her being remembered by three powerful words.

"Love, hope and courage," he said. "It's a tough time for everybody."

Police are currently going through the suspect's electronic devices and social media accounts, looking for a motive.
