Port Covington To Help With Economic Recovery

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A grand opening in Port Covington brings the Congressional "make it in America" plan to south Baltimore.

Pat Warren explains how the foundry fits in with the national plan for economic recovery.

It's called a maker space where people with ideas can develop the skills to go with them. Innovation and skills will combine to create the new big things.

"Think of how powerful this is," said Congressman Steny Hoyer.

Hoyer's office reports since 2010, "make it in America" has seen laws passed to cut taxes and provide loans for small businesses, speed up the patent process, train skilled workers and end tax loopholes that encourage companies to ship jobs overseas.

"It may be oversimplified but it really starts with that, a garage and tools, a place to build," said CEO Jason Hardebeck.

To get ideas off the drawing board and onto the assembly line.

"If we make it---a lot of products---in America, a lot of Americans are going to make it; they're going to succeed," Hoyer said.

With the tools and the knowledge to get there.

The Foundery is a concept Congressman Hoyer plans to take around the country in promoting "make it in America."

The Foundery is a project of Sagamore Ventures, founded by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank.
