Young, Wealthier Residents Eye Up Downtown Living

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--A trend that could transform our city. Young, wealthier residents are moving downtown--looking for a lifestyle of ease and convenience that doesn't require a car.

Bill King grew up in Towson.

But now calls his apartment at 10 Light home.

He, like thousands of other young educated workers, are moving into cities at a rate that hasn't been seen since the 70's.

"I want to be down here, where people my age live. I want to be able to walk to work, the grocery store, walk to bars and restaurants and ideally not have a car and that's what I am doing so far," said King.

Economists say young people aren't in a rush to buy homes and renting is appealing.

"They love the idea of having the flexibility and the freedom of in many cases, renting, or having a smaller place in an urban environment," said King.

Located in the heart of Downtown Baltimore, 10 Light offers over 400 lavish apartment homes. The thirty-four story high-rise is just a few minutes' walk to Baltimore's retail city center area, the central business district, two blocks from the Inner Harbor, and footsteps from the Charles Center Metro Station

Steven Gondol,  Executive Director with Live Baltimore says, "There's a lot here in the city that is really attractive, in terms of quality of life. Baltimore has a unique advantage, where the affordability allows for a lot of entrepreneurs to come in and set up galleries, restaurants, and entertainment establishments that you don't find anywhere else."

You also are finding more and more young people ditching their cars.

"Everything you need is within 4 or 5 blocks, 10 minute walk tops, and if  I  really need to drive somewhere, I take Uber," said King.

Added incentive, many builders are benefiting from a tax credit for new or renovated housing in Baltimore City.
