Negotiations Postpone College Football Wrongful-Death Trial

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — Court records indicate settlement talks are under way in a lawsuit stemming from the 2011 death of a Frostburg State University football player.

An online docket entry Thursday says proceedings in Montgomery County Circuit Court have been stayed for 60 days "to complete the settlement process." The trial had been scheduled to begin next week.

The lawsuit was filed by the parents of Derek Sheely, a senior fullback from Germantown who died from a head injury he suffered in practice. They're seeking $1.5 million for what they claim was negligence by the NCAA, three school athletic staff members, Illinois-based helmet manufacturer Kranos Corp. and Pennsylvania-based retailer George Heider.

NCAA spokeswoman Emily James and family attorney Paul Anderson declined to comment beyond the filing.
