Jason Catania Talks Kershaw, Trade Deadline And More

Jason Catania from MLB.com joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk about the latest around the MLB.

A couple of aces square off tonight in L.A. as Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals take on Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kershaw has been essentially unhittable this season going 10-1 with just a 1.58 ERA. Catania talked about Kershaw's stellar season. "It's sort of laughable the stats he's putting up. I have to check the strikeout to walk rate—it was something like 115 strikeouts and seven walks…For me, what he's doing is sort of unparalleled. I don't know that we've seen it to this extent certainly in my lifetime."

The Texas Rangers currently hold the best record in the American League at 45-25. Catania talked about their potent lineup. "I think they're the team that nobody really seems to be giving the full respect to as probably the best team in the American League right now. When you look at the lineup it's deep, it's dynamic. They have guys that can run, guys that can bash. Nomar Mazara has been a really, really good find for them. He's been probably their most consistent hitter as a 20-year-old."

Scott and Jeremy asked Catania when he expected trades to start to heat up as we draw closer to the trade deadline. "I think it's going to be fairly quiet for a while. Obviously, the second wild card has been talked about before and a big factor. There aren't that many teams that are completely out of it. There might be more activity just from the standpoint that there isn't a great free agent class coming up next year…I think we'll see something big happen, certainly, but I would imagine it would be probably well into July before we see anything major going down."
