Mount St. Mary's Names West Point Dean As Interim President

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Mount St. Mary's University says a former dean of the U.S. Military Academy will serve as interim president while the Catholic school searches for a new top administrator after a tumultuous spring semester.

Spokesman Christian Kendzierski says retired Army Brig. Gen. Timothy Trainor will serve two years as interim president of the school in Emmitsburg, about 60 miles northwest of Baltimore.

Trainor recently retired from West Point after six years as dean.

Karl Einolf, dean of the business school, has been acting president of the nation's second-oldest Catholic university since Simon Newman resigned in February after less than a year on the job.

Newman was widely criticized in academic circles for likening struggling freshmen to "bunnies" that should be drowned if they can't swim in a demanding academic environment.
