Man Suffers Partial Amputation During Firework Display Mishap

HARFORD COUNTY, (WJZ)—A man's finger was partially severed after a firework display mishap in Harford County on Saturday.

It happened around 930 p.m. at the Darlington's 33rd Annual Independence Day event at Francis Silver Park.

Fire officials say a 44-year-old man was igniting a 3-inch firework with a fuse when the firework discharged at the incorrect angle.

The victim sustained a partial amputation to his left ring finger, officials said.

Deputy State Fire Marshals inspected the display site and the preliminary investigation determined the rack holding the fireworks was properly secured as required by code and the mortar tube holding the suspected firework intact and exhibited no signs of failure.

The man was transported to an area hospital where he's listed in stable condition.

Officials say each firework site is inspected prior to the display date. The displays can be ignited by hand with a fuse or electronically.

The investigation into the explosion continues.
