Driver Gets Life For Deliberately Killing Woman, 2-Year-Old

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A woman has been sentenced to life plus 20 years in prison for deliberately plowing her car into a group of people -- killing a woman and a two-year-old.

In May of 2014, prosecutors say Lucresha Mints drove her car onto a sidewalk, killing 25-year-old Latoya Skipwith and her two-year-old cousin Joshua Carter. A seven-year-old girl was also injured.

Investigators say Mints and Skipwith, her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend, had gotten into a heated argument at a home near Franklin and Monroe streets.

Mints left the home and circled around the block. When she returned, she revved her car and drove onto the sidewalk.

Skipwith grabbed the two children and tried to get away, but Mints struck all three before fleeing the scene.

The next day, Mints called Baltimore police claiming she had an accident the night before where she hit a pole, and that the transmission on her car failed as she tried to drive away.

"This sentence highlights our aggressive pursuit of justice for all victims of crime in Baltimore City," said State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby. "I am a mother of two young girls and cannot imagine the heartbreak these families feel. This woman's actions were reckless and showed her lack of disregard for human life. I can only hope that this life sentence brings some sense of justice to the friends and family of those so senselessly killed."

Mints was was convicted of first- and second-degree murder and first degree assault in April.
