Here's Why You Shouldn't Speed On The Beltway's Inner Loop

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) -- Starting Thursday, if you're caught on camera driving more than 12 miles per hour over the posted limit in a work zone on the Inner Loop of the Beltway, it'll cost you.

Speed cameras were installed June 9 on the Inner Loop between the exits to US 1 and Philadelphia Road. With the 21-day warning period expiring, automated enforcement will begin, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

That means you'll be automatically fined $40 if you're recorded driving more than 12 miles over the 55-mph limit.

There are advanced warning signs posted ahead of the construction zone to let drivers know they're being monitored, the MDTA reports, and a speed trailer will let you know how fast you're going.

The goal of the initiative is to encourage drivers to take it slow around the work zone, even where workers are not present. The construction project at the I-95/I-695 interchange will realign I-695 from US 1 to MD 7. Work is expected to be complete this fall.
