What You Need To Know: New Licenses, IDs Roll Out In Maryland

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Over four million Marylanders will soon be carrying a more secure license with a roll out that begins Monday.

"It's actually the most secure card in the country in terms of various security features," said Christine Nizer, chief administrator with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

Security like: new images, raised print, unique bar codes and something no other state has.

"This is a changeable laser image, so one way you'll see the photo of the individual and the other way you'll see the date of birth of the person," said Nizer.

It's all in an effort to cut down phony licenses, that can be used in identity theft scams and to make sure those tickets stick to the right person.

"So if you try to pass off a fake license to any law enforcement officer, we know right away based on the security features they have in place," said Lt. Col. Anthony Satchell, with the Maryland State Police.

New licenses are issued when it comes time for a renewal, but officials say your address must be current because all the cards will be sent by mail.

"That's right. You get to keep your current license and you get an interim document, your receipt. You keep both of those with you for seven to ten days until you get your new product on the mail," said Nizer.

Just make sure it's got the right address.

You can apply for a new license 6 months before your birthday.
