Maryland Celebrates Inaugural Fleet Week & Air Show

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Following the major successes of previous events celebrating the state's rich naval traditions, this year the first ever Fleet Week & Air Show is expected to follow suit by drawing thousands to our area.

George Solis has a preview of what's in store come October.

Aside from the more than a dozen Navy ships that will surround the Inner Harbor, visitors can expect Baltimore's largest air show, featuring the return of the ever-famous and popular Blue Angels.

After a year's absence, the high-flying, highly entertaining Blue Angels are coming back to Baltimore. Crowds came out in droves back in 2012 and 2014 for the Star-Spangled Sailabration and Spectacular to see the Angels in action. It's a winning combination of big ships and big air that never seems to disappoint.

"It takes my breath away," said one viewer.

"It's a chance for us to bring the Navy in town; have 10 ships, 2,500 sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen come in and interact with the public," said Rear Admiral Roy Kelley.

The week-long celebration is projected to attract more than half a million visitors to the Inner Harbor, plus thousands more to Locust Point and Martin State Airport.

The entire experience from sea to sky is designed to celebrate the rich Naval traditions of the Chesapeake Bay and the contributions of Marylanders to the defense and prosperity of our nation.

"Over 6,000 folks from Maryland are currently serving in our Navy; it has a bright future together," said Rear Admiral Yancy Lindsey.

For some, Maryland Fleet Week holds a personal meaning. James Zumwalt tells WJZ a ship commissioned in his father's honor will pay tribute to a fellow Marine.

"In one of those ironic stories, Colonel Spiro escorted my father's remains in 2000 and now the Zumwalt will escort his remains to their final resting place," he said.

The celebration is also expected to bring big business to the area. The best part? It's all free.
