Dave Johnson Talks Orioles First Half & Trade Deadline

Former Oriole and current MASN analyst Dave Johnson joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk about the Orioles first half of the season, what they need to do at the trade deadline and much more.

The Orioles finished the first half of the season two games up in the AL East with a 51-36 record. Johnson talked about how the team got to this point. "They basically bashed their way into this thing and clearly their bullpen is one of the best in the game. So, even though they had very inconsistent, at times, bad starting pitching, they're kind of where they are in the standings. They're going to have to get better, clearly."

The Orioles starting pitchers have a combined 5.15 ERA which is good for third to last in the MLB. Starters not named Chris Tillman and Kevin Gausman have a combined 6.44 ERA. The guys asked Johnson if a player like Trey Mancini is movable for a major league ready arm. "I think at this point, because of where they are with the rotation with so many guys that just are not pitching the way they need them to pitch, yes…To me, that's a piece that is clearly a piece that somebody else may want and then you go get something that you need right now because the window on this club I think is a year or two, maybe stretch it out to three, so you got to go for it at some point."
