Video Talks About '10 Rules Of Survival' If Stopped By Police

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The video "Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival" is getting a lot of attention on the Internet since the shooting of a Minnesota man by police was captured live on Facebook.

More than a year after producing the video, former Baltimore City school teacher David Miller says the conversation is not over.

"This narrative, if you will, about 'get home safely' has been whispered and talked about in black homes for decades. This is not new when we think of unarmed black men and boys being killed," Miller said.

The conversation of what to do if stopped by police has intensified after Philando Castile's girlfriend recorded him getting shot after reaching for his driver's license.

"With my younger nephews -- cause they're teenagers and they're running around and out and on occasion might have them find themselves getting stopped," said Wade Brown.

"Pay attention to what the police are saying and do no more, say no less and get through that incident. If they have a problem, then bring it home and let's deal with it when you get home," Brown added.

According to Miller's "Ten Rules," the first thing you do whenever you are pulled over by an officer is make sure your hands are visible. That way, when the officer is approaching, they know you are not reaching for a weapon.

"I'm quick to respond. If he tells me to get my driver's license and my registration, I ask for permission. Because those are the things that we have to do in order to survive a police stop, but there are no guarantees," said Miller.

"The goal is for my son and other sons to get home safely and then I can file a grievance or look at some other legal remedy," he added.

Miller says he hopes the video creates more than just conversation, but a change in how we think and act.
