BPD Trying To Determine If Gunman Tried To Lure Officers

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A man has died after investigators say he opened fire on Baltimore City police officers using an AR-style rifle. Now police are trying to determine if he was trying to lure officers to the area.

"Why was he firing initially? Who was he firing at? That's something we don't have the answer to. It's something we are currently looking at," said Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith.

Investigators say four plain clothed officers were in a car near the 2300 block of Winchester Street when they heard gunfire. When they went to investigate, the man turned the gun on them.

"It was a very chaotic scene. We did not know if we had more than one suspect on the scene," said T.J. Smith, Baltimore Police Department.

When officers fired back, the man ran into an apartment complex and onto a second floor landing. Officers found him inside, shot in the upper body.

The gun -- an AR-style rifle -- was found stashed in the woods.

The suspect was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say at least two officers fired their weapons. No officers were injured.

Police have not yet identified the suspect.

The two officers who fired their weapons are on routine administrative duties.
