FIRST WARNING WX: Health Dept. Declares Code Red for Monday

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The Baltimore City Health Department has declared a CODE RED Heat Advisory for Monday as the scorching heatwave across the region continues.

"Heat is a silent killer and a public health threat, particularly for the young, the elderly and those in our city who are the most vulnerable," said Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen. "With tomorrow's extreme heat expected, it is important for all residents to protect against hyperthermia and dehydration. Please be cautious and remember to stay cool and hydrated."

Last time we saw temperatures boil up this high was back in 2012, when 46 people in Maryland died from heat-related illnesses.

In 2015, mild temperatures led to six deaths.

"Not only are temps forecast to rise into the upper 90s, once again, but the moisture content in the air will make it feel even hotter," says Meteorologist Chelsea Ingram. "Heat index values will feel into the 105-110 degree range at times during the afternoon and early evening."

Doctor Meagan Lewis says the rising fahrenheit is sending patients to the emergency room.

"Some people come in with headaches because of the dehydration, dry mouth-- fatigue is another big thing as well," says Lewis.

There are ways you can protect yourself from the dangerous heat: stay indoors in conditioning when possible, drink lots of water and never leave children and pets unattended in a car.
