2 New Additions At The Maryland Zoo In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- You'll find two new additions to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore this weekend. The little guys are just about six weeks old, WJZ's Devin Bartolotta reports.

Jalopy may have stripes, but zoo curator Margaret Innes says he is actually a rare species of antelope called a Lesser Kudu.

"He looks like a little half zebra half deer," one young zoo visitor said.

The June baby was born with a hole in his heart, but now, under the protective eye of staff, Jalopy is off and running.

"He appears to be healthy, he appears to be doing very well. His mom is taking good care of him," said Innes.

Jalopy is only about 40 pounds right now, but… "The males can get up to about 200 pounds, and even bigger than that," Innes said.

The Lesser Kudu exhibit isn't the only one with a new addition.

"He is a Sitatunga, so he's also found in the African Journey. The Sitatunga are a species that comes from Central Africa," said Innes.

There is another 5-week-old calf named Chopper.

"He is not out on exhibit quite yet because he is a little younger," Innes said. "So we are still going through that acclamation process with him."

Once he's ready, little kids and big kids alike can stop by, take a peek, and ask questions.

Eventually, both animals may be relocated to other zoos, as zoologists and conservationists figure out how they can best protect the species.

Chopper's first day on exhibit is scheduled for Sunday. You can find both of these babies in the African Journey.
