1-Year-Old Child Critical After Apparent Near-Drowning

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — Cumberland police say a 1-year-old child is in critical condition after an apparent near-drowning in a bathtub.

The agency said in a statement Thursday that the child's father called 911 on Wednesday night about an unresponsive child.

Police say ambulance workers arrived at the home to find the man attempting CPR on the child. Emergency responders then took over.

Police say the father told investigators he had left the child and a 2-year-old sibling in the bathtub while doing household chores. He told police that the older child called for him a short time later, and he found the 1-year-old face down in the tub.

Police say the child is being treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia.
