Marylanders Can Shop Tax Free Through Aug. 20

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ)--Maryland is giving shoppers a break with "Tax-Free Week".

When Jeannie Davis buys clothing for her two school-aged children, no saving is too small.

"His tennis shoes are like $100 and something dollars now," Davis tells WJZ's Amy Yensi.

That's why she looks forward to Tax-Free Week.

From August 14th through the 20th, clothing and footwear priced $100 or less are exempt from Maryland's 6% sales tax.

State Comptroller Peter Franchot is promoting the tax-break at Mondawmin Mall.

By getting a head-start on his shopping, he says waving the sales tax generates money for local businesses.

"It gets people in a shopping mode when they traditionally are not and then it carries over post labor day," said Franchot.

Tax-Free Week comes just in time for back to school shopping. Retailers say the only other times they get this much business, are during the December and Easter.

And the savings can add up!

According to the National Retail Federation, back-to school-shoppers are spending an average of $674 in 2016. That's up from $630 last year. The biggest cost? Apparel and accessories.

Tax-Free Week starts this Sunday. There's no limit to the amount of items you can buy, as long as they're under $100.
