Police Recover Weapon Used In Deadly Shooting of Lor Scoota

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police have recovered the weapon that they believe was involved in the shooting death of local rapper Tyriece Watson back in June.

Police believe someone targeted Watson, also known as "Lor Scoota," as he left a peace rally at Morgan State University, tracking him as he drove towards the intersection of Moravia and Harford Roads.

On Tuesday, authorities say they also have a person of interest in the case, identified as 23-year-old Avery Walton, of the 2600 block of Coldspring Lane.

"That doesn't mean this person is the trigger man, we don't know that yet," said Baltimore Police Spokesperson T.J. Smith.

Terrell Hartley was there the day Watson was gunned down.

"Everybody was surprised that it was Scoota, that it happened right there in broad daylight," he said. "Like 10 shots, 13 shots, the whole neighborhood heard it."

Police first released surveillance video of a green, Nissan Quest minivan, linking it to the murder.

"It's through investigative means that we were able to get this person in custody and it takes a little bit of time to identify a ballistic match, and we were able to do that," said Smith.

While Walton is not being charged with murder at this time, police feel they're finally inching closer to getting Scoota's killer off the streets.

"We don't want anyone to think it's been fallen by the wayside; this is something our investigators are on every day," Smith said.

Walton is being charged with handgun and drug violations.

Police say they have not linked the gun to Trayvone Lee's murder--Lil Scoota's manager--who was killed just days after the rapper.

WJZ reached out to a family rep for Lor Scoota, they say the family does not wish to speak at this time and are waiting for an arrest to be made.

Police say they've received a record number of tips in the case. Anyone with information on Lil Scoota's killing is urged to call police immediately.
