Parents, Kids Celebrate First Day Of School In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- There will now be 83,000 children and their parents traveling to and from schools in the city every day, as Baltimore and nine other school districts in Maryland opened their doors to students today.

Mike Schuh was there for the morning bell at one local school, John Eager Howard Elementary, Monday morning.

He said there were lots of smiles on parents' faces. Kids, however, weren't sure if this "going to school" thing is what they want to spend the next 10 months doing.

Democratic mayoral nominee Catherine Pugh was there, as well as new Superintendent Sonja Brookins Santelises.

Most of the state's 800,000 public school students are now back in session. The exception is Worcester County, which starts next Monday.
