Baltimore City Hall Lights Up Blue For Saint Teresa

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Baltimore's City Hall is being lit up in blue Sunday night, as ordered by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, in honor of Pope Francis' naming Mother Teresa as a Saint.

Pope Francis canonized Mother Teresa before thousands at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City Sunday morning. Mother Teresa devoted her life to helping the poor in India and around the world.

Mother Teresa twice visited Baltimore, first in 1992 for the dedication of a hospice for AIDS patients in East Baltimore and again in 1996 to visit the headquarters of Catholic Relief Services.

Baltimore is considered the birthplace of Catholicism in the United States, as John Carroll established the first diocese of the church in the nation. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore is the country's first cathedral.

A Mass was held Sunday morning at the Baltimore Basilica honoring Saint Mother Teresa, and Archbishop William Lori will hold another celebration Mass for Saint Mother Teresa September 10 for the Missionaries of Charity at the Catholic Church in East Baltimore.
