Univ. of Maryland Security Guard Shot In Robbery Near Campus; Second Suspect Sought

ADELPHI, Md. (WJZ) —A University of Maryland College Park security guard is fighting for his life after a violent armed robbery occurs early Tuesday morning at the UMUC Inn & Conference Center.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the security officer who remains in surgery," said University of Maryland Chief, David Mitchell. "We do not believe this attack was targeted at any students."

Alerts went out campus wide as police locked down the area for several hours, putting students on edge.

It's a busy part of University Boulevard near, many off the campus apartments and about a 10-minute walk to the student union.

"We were really afraid, the second I woke up and saw that I was like, 'Oh my gosh I live right here and this happened not even a block away,'" said Aanchal Kanodia.

Officers found the one suspect hiding in the woods after an intense search that included K9s. They also recovered several portable safes that they say the men stole from the UMUC facility.

Police found a gun clip in the glass used by one of masked gunman.

"After shooting the security officer, they discarded the safes and at least one handgun that we believe was used in the shooting," said Mitchell.

There are many cameras in the area and investigators hope those images can help them capture a man they're calling "armed and dangerous".

Authorities have not identified the security guard at this time.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police immediately.
