Maryland Girl, 15, Pepper Sprayed, Charged After Bike Crash

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Police in Hagerstown, Maryland, say officers pepper-sprayed a 15-year-old girl and charged her with assault and disorderly conduct after her bicycle hit a car.

Capt. Paul Kifer said Wednesday that the white officers who arrested the mixed-race girl acted properly. He says she became assaultive as officers tried to get her into a cruiser for a ride to a police station on Sunday.

Kifer says police needed to question her about the accident and find a parent to sign off on her refusal to receive medical treatment.

The girl’s lawyer, Robin Ficker, says she was mistreated and that she should have been taken to a hospital. He says she has sprained muscles, and sore wrists where she was handcuffed.

Ficker says the girl has a white mother and black father.

If that had been my child pepper spray would have been nothing compared to what she would have gotten at home for such behavior. OK so people who raise a child who behaves like that are probably no prizes themselves. She needs to learn how to behave and have her mouth washed out with soap. Those cops gave her dozens of opportunities to cooperate and the law says they needed to detain her as she caused damage to someone’s property and it was also their duty to get her parent’s consent to provide or decline medical care as she could have been injured and perhaps not realized it. Police can only release minors into the custody of a parent or guardian, that is the law, so the officers (who do not make the laws) were required to enforce it for the safety of the minor child. Remember, that gutter mouth thing is legally a child. If she was so seriously challenged that she is unable to understand simple orders and situations, she should not have been out riding a bike (illegally w/o a helmet) by herself. At no time in the video do I see any of the officers mistreat her and she literally had DOZENS of opportunities to do as told and get into the car. When it takes 3 officers to handle someone regardless of his or her age, that is resisting and the pepper spray was warranted as they could have been there all day and she would not have put her feet into the car so they could leave. SHE assaulted the officers & damaged their equipment as well as the man’s car. The police did make an effort to contact the parent/s and bring them to the scene, but she would not provide the information and none of the bystanders knew it. What choice did they have?

She got what she deserved. Talking and acting like an idiot. Her lawyer needs to re-watch the video to see that her client is in the wrong – NOT the police officers. She had ample warnings and she ignored them. If she was my child and she did that – her back end would be black and blue and she wouldn’t be sitting for a week.

PEOPLE MUST UNDERSTAND THAT WE MUST TO OBEY TO POLICE OFFICERS. SHE GOT WHAT SHE DESERVED. SHE SHOULD BEEN SPRAY ON THE SECOND ORDER TO STOP RESISTING. THIS BEHAVIOR TELLS YOU THAT PROBABLY THE PARENTS ARE WORST. I HOPE THAT SHE SPEND TIME IN JAIL!

Why must these people made a huge issue out of a minor problem? The whole thing could have been settled in a matter of minutes if the girl hadn’t acted the fool.

What the hell does race have to do with this?! So what if the officers where white and she was Biracial? Race has nothing to do with the fact that she ignored orders and warnings to comply, she resisted arrest and ASSAULTED an officer! Little brat was warned several times and ignored every warning. She got nothing more that what she deserved and far less than she would if she was my child.
