Family Grieves the Loss of 11-Year-Old Girl Killed In Crash

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ)-- An 11-year-old girl died in a car crash Saturday afternoon, after 26-year-old Dominic McCoy was operating the vehicle intoxicated, traveling at a high rate of speed, injuring another 11-year-old girl, a 9-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy.

Not only was that little girl's twin sister in the car but two of her other siblings were also in the back seat. The mother says even though one of her baby is gone this situation could have been even more tragic.

Four siblings lives are forever shattered after 11-year-old Laniera Middleton died Saturday.

"I'm a wreck, but I have to put my face on for my other three," said the victim's mother, Renee Smith.

Laniera left behind two younger siblings and a twin who still has no idea her sister is gone.

"It's going to crush her. They were tight, they were the Bonnie and Clyde."

Police say McCoy had all four of the kids in his car but they weren't strapped in properly. They say McCoy was speeding on Frederick Avenue in west Baltimore Saturday afternoon.

When he crossed the center line and collided with an SUV. Police say McCoy didn't have a license and he was under the influence.

"Dominic McCoy made a terrible decision getting behind that wheel and driving while impaired and we have four lives that will never be the same and one of those lives was lost," said Baltimore City Police Detective Nicole Monroe.

All of the children attended Samuel F.B. Morse. On Monday crisis team members were at the school to help their classmates through their grief.

"We had to write a letter and tell her how we feel," said one student, Kaniya P.

Monday night, the driver's mother stood side by side with the twins' grieving mother and they both had a message of forgiveness for McCoy who's locked up on $1.2 million bail.

"He is not handing it very well. When they told him that she died, he went to pieces," said the driver's mother, Marsha Dorsey. "I just want him to know I love him and I just wish that it didn't have to be this way."

McCoy has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. The twin's mother says McCoy was her god brother.

The victim's mother says the remaining three children are doing better. One has already been released from the hospital, but two are still hospitalized.

A vigil will be held Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the intersection of Frederick Avenue and Longwood Ave.
