Maryland Governor Larry Hogan Up in Polls

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Governor Larry Hogan is on track to become the state's most popular governor. According to a new Goucher poll, the majority of voters think he's making all the right moves. Political reporter Pat Warren has more on the latest of those moves.

They are decisions that serve to cement his consistently high approval ratings.

Breaking those party barriers, a new Goucher poll gives Republican Larry Hogan a 70% approval rating. It's the second time this month Hogan has polled in the 70's.

"I think this is the big takeaway message - the honeymoon is over, this is not a honeymoon effect, this is not an empathy bump because of his cancer diagnosis. This is sustained positive ratings from Maryland residents," said Mileah Kromer, Goucher Hughes Politics Center.

Hogan put his foot down on the starting schools after Labor Day debate. 68% of voters polled support the post-Labor Day holiday start, and if what it took was an executive order, 67% were okay with that.

"He made the decision not to endorse Donald Trump, and this was a decision pretty popular in the state," said Kromer.

"I'm not going to talk about Donald Trump anymore, I have nothing to do with Donald Trump," said Hogan.

That declaration also served him well -- 44% in the Goucher poll, say it changed their opinion of him for the better - only 5% said it changed their opinion for the worse.

"Governor Hogan for many Marylanders, is somebody who can manage state government, who has good leadership skills, and is someone they actually like a lot," said Kromer.

And have continued to like in the parade of polls since he was elected. These high ratings make Larry Hogan one of the most popular governors in the country.

An OpinionWorks poll earlier this month gave Hogan a 71% approval rating.
