Zombies, Mermaids Coming Out The Woodwork For Halloween

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- If you plan to celebrate Halloween, you'll have a lot of company. The National Retail Federation says Americans will spend $8.4 billion on candy, costumes, cards and more.

They're ready for Halloween at Geresbeck's Supermarket, where candy is king and you might say costumes are queen. Folks came out early to be on WJZ Morning Edition.

It's a busy time at Artistic Costumes in Towson.

"It's going to be insane. All the parties will be tonight and tomorrow and some on Monday. We love Halloween and we're happy when it's over, but it's my favorite time of the year," said Harriet Berlin, owner of Artistic Costumes.

"We have seven dressing rooms between our two stores... A lot of people wait for the last minute," she added.

You never know who you might run into!

"Pokemon is popular, mermaids are popular, police men and women are popular every year, and zombies do well because people are doing a lot of makeup effects," said Berlin.

Kids of all ages are in the moment.

"We love the costumes. My daughter is the 'skeleton of all evil this year.' She's already got her costumes planned out for the next couple of years," said Linda Frueh, of Middle River.

But it's a good time to dress up and make it a family affair.

"We're taking the kids out trick or treating. Dressing up is exciting for them. That's what I love about it," said Marshall Addington, of Essex.

The National Retail Federation says 171 million Americans will celebrate Halloween and on average will spend just under $83 on the day.
