College Football Player From Baltimore Arrested After Campus Armed Robbery

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (WJZ/AP) — A New Jersey College put on lockdown after police say one of the school's football players pointed a gun at two students.

Monmouth County prosecutors say Monmouth University freshman Keith Williams, of Baltimore, was taken into custody Tuesday night. Bail was set at $100,000 cash.

The suspect graduated from Overlea High School earlier this year, where he also played football.  During this investigation, the university officials say he has been suspended indefinitely from their football team.

It wasn't known Wednesday if the 18-year-old offensive lineman has a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

Authorities say two female students reported that a man wearing a hooded black sweatshirt and a stocking mask approached them around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday on the campus in West Long Branch. Authorities say the man pulled out a handgun and demanded their cellphones.

The women ran and the suspect was captured a short time later in a dormitory.

The students escaped unharmed and called police, though the incident launched a campus-wide lockdown and manhunt for the suspect.

"I was actually in the library working and everyone treated it as a joke," said a student.

Williams was found a short time later in his dorm and police also recovered a fake gun.

"They did a good job with safety. I feel safe on this campus," said one student.

Williams has been removed from the football team, and charged with first degree armed robbery.

The university lifted the lockdown around midnight Wednesday, and classes for students resumed Thursday.

Monmouth University is also reviewing the incident under the student code of conduct.
