Local School Districts Work To Approve Post-Labor Day Calendars

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --  Squeezing in ten extra days has proven to be a complicated issue, and many Maryland public schools are still undecided.

Announced this past summer, Governor Larry Hogan ordering Maryland's public schools to start after labor day, and end by June 15.

"Tere weren't a lot of options for our calendar committee in this when you have a defined start and end, you're only dealing with those moving parts in those parameters," said Bob Mosier, Anne Arundel County Public schools.

Anne Arundel County Public schools approved their new calendar this month, cutting from spring break, and days for inclement weather.

A decision being criticized by parents, and the governor's office who told WJZ: "While we are pleased that Anne Arundel county is complying with the Governor's Executive Order, it is disappointing and misleading that the school board is opting to reduce spring break when the proposed calendar includes a dozen full or partial union service days," they said in a statement.

"We said when the governor first ordered the executive order the glee of a longer summer would well be mitigated when parents see some of the choices we are going to have to make," said Mosier.

Schools are required to have 180 instructional days. The new policy forces schools to create ten days within the new calendar, many still undecided on how to adjust.

Baltimore county is considering three different calendars, Carroll County is up for public review for the start day, Harford County also up for public review, and Howard County is still reviewing their options.

School districts also have the option to apply for a waiver if they can't comply with the law. Many schools hope to make a decision by the end of this year.
