Record Turnout For Early Voters

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) — As locals head to the polls for Election Day, numbers are due to be coming in from early voting by Tuesday afternoon. Early voting ended in Maryland on November 3, after an eight day run.

Baltimore City had the fourth highest early voting turnout numbers in the state. The Maryland Board Of Elections tells WJZ that that they expect to have results from early voting ballots in as early as this afternoon.

And, with four people vying for the Baltimore mayor's seat, one of which includes Sheila Dixon's write-in campaign, write-in votes will also be looked at by election board officials.

Maryland officials say the state saw a record number of voters casting ballots early.

Of those in Baltimore City who were eligible to vote, 23 percent early voted.

Media outlets report more than 800,000 people in the state had turned out at polls by the time early voting ended on the evening of November 3.

That's more than the 430,500 Marylanders who voted early during the 2012 presidential election.

The record turnout means more than 20 percent of the state's registered voters cast ballots before Election Day.

Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1 in Maryland. Democrats have cast about three times as many ballots as Republicans. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is expected to win easily in the state.

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan has said he won't be voting for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. He's just the second elected Republican governor in the past half-century in Maryland.
