Election Day Woes: Long Lines, Issues At Some Md. Polling Sites

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Voting began bright and early at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, with long lines and delays at some Maryland polling sites.

For example, voting began 45 minutes late at Beth Am Synagogue on Eutaw Place.

Baltimore Election Director Armstead Jones was called in after there were issues with Election Board staff.

There were also issues with voting machines at Reservoir Hill Improvement Council. A tech was called in and the machines were fixed and voting began around 8 a.m.

"We had a situation where our chief judge left the site frustrating this morning and left two judges to try to figure out what to do," says Armstead Jones, Baltimore City elections director.

Jones brought in seven or eight more judges to stabilize the site. The same polling place had issues during the primary election and stayed open late to accommodate voters.

Our news partner The Baltimore Sun reports voter machines were down briefly at Enoch Pratt library's central branch, and ballots were cast a half hour late at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School, Matt Gallagher, CEO of the Goldseker Foundation tells The Sun.

Despite issues early on in the day, 20 percent of Baltimore City's registered voters had hit the polls by 2 p.m. That's on top of the 23 percent that voted early.

By 5 p.m., 114,274 votes had been cast in the city, according to the Baltimore City Board of Elections.
