Man Dies After Setting Woman, House On Fire, Officials Say

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Kettering man has died and a 60-year-old woman is in critical condition after fire officials say the man lit the woman and her home on fire Tuesday, according to Prince George's County Fire/EMS officials.

Around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, the woman emerged from her home in the unit block of Herrington Drive and sought help from a group of poll workers at the nearby Kettering Middle School.

She had 3rd degree burns on the upper half of her body. While some of the workers helped her, another called 911 to report that the house across the street was on fire.

When firefighters arrived, they also found 64-year-old Louis Ferrard Fedee outside the home suffering from burn and smoke inhalation injuries.

Medics treated and transported both patients to area hospitals for their injuries. Both were listed in critical condition at area hospitals Tuesday night.

Fedee died of his injuries Wednesday morning.

The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters, and monetary loss is estimated at $100,000.

Two dogs escaped the burning house on their own, recovered, and have been placed into the care of county animal control. Two other resident of the house, a woman and an infant, were not at home when the fire occurred. They are displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

A Prince George's County Fire Captain sustained burn injuries while battling the fire, but has since been treated at and released from Medstar Washington Hospital Center Burn Unit.

Officials from the Office of the Fire Marshal say their investigation has determined that the woman was doused with an ignitable liquid and set on fire by Fedee, her long-time acquaintance, during an argument they were having in the basement of the house.
