Protests, Flag Burned At American University In DC

WASHINGTON, DC (WJZ) --  Students gathered in protest at American University's campus in D.C. as people burned American flags.

WUSA9 reports several dozen people gathered around a man who held up a small American flag, and set it on fire with a lighter. At one point, a woman tried to help.

The inident has been shared on Facebook by Facebook user Noa Leibowitz.

WUSA9 reporter John Henry reporting that protests began as early as 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump supporters both showing up.

"I'm not surprised this face-off is happening. It makes me sad and confused and afraid for the future of this school and this nation holds," said one American University student.

Earlier in the afternoon, AU tweeted a message to students calling for the campus to come together following the election and a season of division.

WUSA9 multimedia journalist Elizabeth Jia reported seeing a heated exchange involving Black Student Alliance members and other students on campus. One student held up a ballot with the words "Why did you vote hate?" written on it.

On Wednesday, protests also were reported at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas, University Connecticut, and California State University North Ridge.
