Gov. Hogan Appoints New Sheriff In Howard County

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has announced the appointment of William J. "Bill" McMahon as the new Howard County Sheriff.

McMahon succeeds former Sheriff James Fitzgerald, who resigned in October following allegations he created a hostile work environment, by making racist and anti-semitic remarks, and retaliating against deputies who didn't support his re-election campaign.

McMahon currently serves as acting executive director of the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions.

He previously served as Chief of Police of Howard County from 2006 to 2014.

"I am honored and humbled to be appointed by Governor Hogan to be the sheriff of Howard County," he said. "As a 30-year resident of the county, I am deeply committed to upholding our laws and working to ensure the safety of all citizens of our county and our great state."
