Hundreds At Inner Harbor Ice Rink For Opening Day

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Winter is here... at least, it is down at the Inner Harbor.

On Friday, the Pandora Ice Rink welcomed hundreds of skaters for opening day. Baltimore's mayor helped to kick things off.

"We want people to come down -- visitors to come and visit, and we also want residents to come down and enjoy our great city," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

Skaters of all ages filled the rink.

"I wouldn't expect so many people to know how to ice skate -- it's not easy -- so I'm glad it's here for people to learn," said Pete Linkroum.

From professional figure skaters to beginners, the Pandora Ice Rink invites skaters of all levels.

"I like it when my dad pushes me because I can feel the wind," said eight-year-old Nina.

Last year, the rink had 20,000 visitors. This year, they're hoping to top that.

"We had people from every single neighborhood throughout the city come to the ice rink to skate and have fun together, and it's just important for Baltimore," said Laurie Schwartz, president, Waterfront Partnership.

It's not exactly winter yet, but skaters can still enjoy the holiday tradition.

"It's weird. You can see the ice melting a little bit, but it still skates fine," said Linkroum.

The rink is open until 11 p.m. Friday. All service members and veterans skate for free in honor of Veterans Day.

The rink is open seven days a week.
