Mark Trumbo Named 2016 Silver Slugger Award Recipient
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Orioles Mark Trumbo has been named a recipient of the 2016 Silver Slugger Award for one of three American League outfield positions, becoming the first Orioles outfielder to win the award since Adam Jones in 2013.
Trumbo led Major League Baseball with 47 home runs and ranked tied for eighth with 108 RBI over 159 games with the Orioles this season, becoming the third player in Orioles history to post a 40-homer season in his first year with the club (also, Nelson Cruz, 40 home runs in 2014 and Frank Robinson, 49 home runs in 1966).
Trumbo was named a 2016 American League All-Star and competed in the Home Run Derby as the No. 1 seed, falling to eventual champion Giancarlo Stanton (Miami) in the semifinals. He finished the season ranked ninth in the American League with a .533 slugging percentage and set career-highs in home runs, RBI, hits (157), and runs scored (94).
The Orioles have now had 12 different Silver Slugger Award recipients and 21 total winners, with the 2013 trio of Chris Davis, J.J. Hardy, and Jones as the last to receive the award.
Past winners also include Eddie Murray (1983-84), Mickey Tettleton (1989), Cal Ripken, Jr. (1983-86, 1989, 1991, 1993-94), Roberto Alomar (1996), Rafael Palmeiro (1998), Melvin Mora (2004), Miguel Tejada (2004-05), and Aubrey Huff (2008).
Silver Slugger Award winners were determined by a vote of Major League Baseball coaches and managers who select the players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in their respective leagues.
