Maryland Soldier Killed In Kuwait

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A soldier from Bowie was killed in a non-combat incident in Kuwait on Thursday, according to the Department of Defense.

The 23-year-old Specialist from Bowie, Ronald L. Murray Jr., was from the 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division based at Fort Bliss, Texas.

He was deployed as part of the battle against the self-declared Islamic State. Murray Jr. worked in fire support, was killed in a vehicle accident, according to Fort Bliss spokesman Gil Telles.

Telles did not have further details of the accident.

Our media partner, The Baltimore Sun, reports Spc. Murray Jr. is the third Marylander to die during a military deployment this year.

"He was an outstanding soldier with an infectious smile, and sense of humor that would brighten any room," Col. Robert E. Lee Magee, commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, said in a statement.

"He will be missed by his family, his fellow soldiers and his command," he said.

Telles said Murray entered the service in January 2015, and was assigned to the unit in June.

An airman from Glen Burnie,Nathaniel H. McDavitt, was killed in Jordan in April when the building he was in collapsed under high winds. And Staff Sgt. Adam S. Thomas, from Takoma Park, was killed in a bomb blast in Afghanistan in October.
