Pre-Dawn Fire Destroys Nearly Completed Hospice Residence

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a pre-dawn blaze that destroyed a nearly completed hospice residence in Hagerstown.

The Herald-Mail reports that the fire at the facility known as Doey's House was reported shortly before 3 a.m. Monday. Funkstown Volunteer Fire Company Chief Steve Pifer says flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived.

The $5 million facility with room for 12 patients was to have been finished by Dec. 31. It would have been the first hospice residence in Washington County.

Hospice of Washington County began raising funds for the project in 2013. It was named for Doris Glessner, the mother of local businessman Neal Glessner.
