BGE Helps Bees, Butterflies Live Under Power Lines In Parks
BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. says it's teaming up with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to help bees and butterflies thrive beneath power lines in state parks.
The agency said in a statement last week it will stop mowing beneath power lines in five state parks and allow meadows to grow instead.
Meadows provide natural habitat for the insects that pollinate crops and gardens. Scientists have become concerned about declining populations of pollinators due to loss of habitat.
The company says it maintains about 200 acres of electric right-of-way in Maryland state parks.
The parks involved are Morgan Run Natural Environment Area, Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, Patapsco Valley State Park, Gunpowder Falls State Park and along the Torrey C. Brown Trail.
