Winter Weather Affects Roads Throughout Maryland & D.C.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- As the last weekend of fall, ice and snowy weather conditions descended upon Eastern and Midwestern areas.

The icy and cold conditions caused massive delays and accidents all along the East Coast, especially in Maryland and Virginia.

Maryland State Troopers say they responded to more than 330 crashes statewide in the past 24 hours, including an early-morning fatal bus crash along I-95 near Eastern Avenue.

"We had a multi-vehicle crash in that area. One of the operators exited his vehicle after the crash and was struck and killed on the road," says Lt. Kevin Ayd, with Maryland Transportation Authority.

On the Capitol Beltway in Virginia, one person was killed in a crash involving 23 cars in Fairfax County near Route 50.

Police say in that incident, a man walked a mile away from the crash and was found dead, but it's unclear how he died.

"People were underestimating it and there was no braking control available for people on the road. People weren't ready for it," said one witness.

Virginia's Department of Transportation did pre-treat the roads, but it wasn't enough.

The same system that hit the Baltimore area also dumped a half a foot of snow in the central part of the country.

The biggest threat was the frigid temperatures dropping to minus twenty -- the lowest it's been in December in 16 years.

"We live in Minnesota and we had a beautiful fall. Winter was bound to come at some time," said Minneapolis resident Colleen Weber.
