Police Arrest Drone Operator For Interfering During College Park Fire

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police in Prince George's County say that Homeland Security officials arrested a suspect after he was caught flying a drone in restricted airspace near a five-alarm fire in College Park.

Police say they arrested 24-year-old Trevon Miller, after his drone almost collided with a police helicopter.

Investigators say at around 12:30 p.m., Prince George's County Police's helicopter was flying to assist firefighters who were working to contain the massive fire.

However, while on task, police say the suspect flew his privately-owned drone into the direct flight path of the police helicopter. The helicopter pilot was able to perform evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision.

Police say they were able to locate the suspect piloting the drone and was arrested by officers on the ground.

Police say Miller is charged with interfering with police and fire response, as well as reckless endangerment.

Investigators will be consulting with the FAA in considering additional charges.
