Massive Fire in Maryland Extinguished After 4-Plus Days

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — A massive fire that consumed a six-story building under construction near the University of Maryland has been declared extinguished after burning for more than four days.

Prince George's County fire officials announced Friday afternoon that the fire is completely out. It started burning on Monday morning. Fire department spokesman Mark Brady says firefighters have ended their 24-hour monitoring of the building for flare-ups and have turned it back over to its owner.

Damage from the fire was estimated at $39 million. Investigators believe it was accidental, but they haven't determined exactly how and where it started. The 6-story building was to include apartments and retail. The fire prompted the university to cancel classes because of heavy smoke and poor air quality.
