Does Maryland’s Flag Have Confederate Ties? Social Media Campaign Sparks Controversy

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — During a social media campaign to derail HBO’s planned modern-day Southern slavery drama, one Twitter user’s posts about the history of the Maryland flag got a lot of attention.

“What a lot of people don’t know is that the Maryland flag is half confederate,” @benjancewicz wrote, using the hashtag #NoConfederate.

And, he’s kind of right.

Yes, even though Maryland was a Union state, the flag — which is featured on the state’s license plate and is a popular adornment for clothing and accessories — does contain some Confederate symbolism.

The flag’s older history is tied to George Calvert, an English politician and colonizer who more or less founded the Maryland colony, although he died just weeks before the charter for the state was approved in 1632. The settlement of the area was left to his firstborn son Cecil and his second son Leonard Calvert was the first colonial governor of the province.

“George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore, adopted a coat of arms that included a shield with alternating quadrants featuring the yellow-and-black colors of his paternal family and the red-and-white colors of his maternal family, the Crosslands,” state archives say.

“When the General Assembly in 1904 adopted a banner of this design as the state flag, a link was forged between modern-day Maryland and the very earliest chapter of the proprietorship of the Calvert family.”

But the red and white part of the flag, known as the Crossland arms, was also the design flown by Marylanders who sympathized with the South in the Civil War, according to state records.

“During the war, Maryland-born Confederate soldiers used both the red-and-white colors and the cross bottony design from the Crossland quadrants of the Calvert coat of arms as a unique way of identifying their place of birth,” the records say. “Pins in the cross bottony shape were worn on uniforms, and the headquarters flag of the Maryland-born Confederate general Bradley T. Johnson was a red cross bottony on a white field.”

During the slow process of reconciliation after the Civil War ended in Union victory in 1865, a “flag incorporating alternating quadrants of the Calvert and Crossland colors began appearing at public events” in the state.

The origins of the flag including both designs is not known, but state records say it was being flown by October 1880.

In 1888, the flag was carried by Maryland National Guard troops escorting Governor Elihu E. Jackson at the dedication ceremonies for the Maryland monument at the Gettysburg Battlefield.

The next year, the Fifth Regiment, Maryland National Guard, adopted the flag as its regimental color, becoming the first organization to adopt it officially.

And, as previously mentioned, it was declared the official state flag by the General Assembly in 1904.

  1. Maryland was forced to remain in the Union by unwelcome foreign military occupation. Maryland was rightly seen as hostile territory to the Federals. To say she was a Union State implies Maryland was loyal to the Union. Maryland’s loyalty was with her brothers and sisters of the South. Saying otherwise shows a lack of knowledge about Maryland’s history before during and after Lincoln’s war. I don’t see this offended by the Maryland flag thing getting any traction. The flag is too beautiful. Everyone loves it. Yes, it is tied to the Confederacy, so is the State. Newcomers try to disguise, rewrite, and change Maryland’s history, but they won’t succeed. This is one fake controversy Marylanders will not give in to.

    1. Jace Curioso says:

On April 19, 1861, the first blood of the American Civil War is shed when a secessionist mob in Baltimore attacks Massachusetts troops bound for Washington, D.C. Four soldiers and 12 rioters were killed.

    2. That’s not entirely true either. Maryland was neither Union nor Confederate. Being the Mason-Dixon line, the alliances varied by county and by family. Maryland was a mixed state at best. I agree with you that this is manufactured controversy. Someone is always looking for racism from 200 years ago to justify current stupid behavior. At least you can say you know more history than most Marylanders.

      1. Technically, every state of the Confederacy had Pro Union elements. A look at some brief facts, however, would demonstrate that Maryland would have likely seceded if not for its geographic location. The fact that over 25,000 Maryland volunteered to cross a Union blockade to fight in the South is evident enough. But more importantly, just look at the 1860 Election. Marylanders voted over 90 percent for the 2 Southern Candidates. In fact, John Breckenridge, a Southern Democrat (which was the most pro-Secessionist Party) won the state. Lincoln only receive 2 percent of the vote, mainly from pro-Union Western Maryland. A look at the militaristic actions Lincoln and General Butler took at the beginning of the War Between the States, such as suspending Habeas Corpus, declaring Martial Law, forcing the State Government to move to Pro Union Frederick, etc. further illustrates Maryland’s sympathies. Lastly, Maryland could not act on secession until Virginia did, for clear reasons. Virginia waited to long. By the time Maryland could vote, Northern soldiers were in the state by the tens of thousands.

        -Bye-Bye Maryland

      2. greatgosh says:

Tell us more about the Mason-Dixon line professor.

    3. Until Lincoln started ENSLAVING free men with the draft and sending hundreds of thousands off to die, more MD men went south than joined the Union. After the draft started, nearly every voluntary enlistment was Confederate, with even some Union sympathizers rejecting a forced ‘Union’.

    4. Not too mention, on August 7, 1861, Lincoln ordered the arrest of Maryland legislators who were deemed sympathetic to the southern cause to prevent them from voting for secession. They spend most of the war locked up at Federal Hill in Baltimore. One of the reasons Habea Corpus had to be suspended by Lincoln (as it was not really a crime to be thinking of voting for secession).

  2. Liberals will literally attack at anything to try and destroy history. First you attack at southerners in general, then at our heritage. Now you are taking down our flags and statues and saying that anything that has even a touch of resemblance to the Confederate Battle Flag must be ‘racist’. Leave history alone.

    1. Ron Partain says:

its called “critical theory,” and its very real.

      1. Jim Nowotny says:

When do we start burning books?

      2. Bob Johnson says:

        Frankfort School.

      3. @Ron Partian

“its called “critical theory,” and its very real.”

Are you speaking of critical race theory? It is a theory but I am not certain that it can survive the scrutiny of the scientific method. In my opinion it only serves to divide people into groups that the political class likes to keep us in to make it easier for them to sell us snake oil.

If you can pit one group against another you can tap into their jealousy and use that as a tool to get people elected who are saying the sky is falling.

    2. you are right, the Left are the new Taliban in the west, seking to destroy everything that they even think has something to do with something they disagree with, no matter how much a part of history it is

  3. This just shows the state of our education system. It’s no secret and anyone who can do a few minutes of research online knows that the cross on the Maryland Flag was a Confederate symbol and that the current state flag was designed to show that the two sides had reconciled. I’ve read in several different books that for several decades after the Civil War in order to get ahead in Maryland politics you had to prove that you were pretty much loyal to the Confederate cause which is one reason why the democratic party became so popular in this state.

    1. Actually it is the Second Lord Baltimore’s actual coat of arms made into a flag.

    2. Duke Brooks says:

The main design elements were formalized in the SEVENTEENTH CENTURY, based on centuries-old heraldric elements of the Calvert and Crossland family coats-of-arms. The Christian ‘bottony’ or Lazarus cross that appears in the flag and atop the Maryland flag pole was authorized by the Pope since the Crossland family fought in the Crusades. Please stop the bigoted and mendacious left-wing revisionism and anti-American fanaticism. Maryland was NOT a Confederate state, individuals therein with southern sympathies notwithstanding. And the ‘state flag’ was no more influenced by CSA politics than the man in the moon.

  4. This is beyond absurd. The Maryland flag is the arms that were taken by George Calvert when he was created Lord Baltimore. You can find them in Burke’s General Armory. If some Maryland Confederate Unit adopted a portion of those arms, they would have been following centuries-old heraldic tradition and state protocol. It no more makes Lord Baltimore’s banner “half Confederate” than hauling a can of gasoline in the family car makes the car a gasoline tanker

    .

    1. That metaphor/simile was amazing. Well Done!

      -Bye-Bye Maryland

  5. So, some people in the 1860s who supported the Confederacy, took up the old, pre-existing Crossland symbol as theirs, though this wasn’t the real meaning of the Crossland arms… and this would make the present Maryland arms disqualified as being pro-Confederacy? Stupid… oh, so stupid. *sigh*

Let the flag be as it is.

  6. Radical Islam and SJWs with their shared desire to erase history.

  7. No matter how the Confederate supporters used it, the flag is Lord Baltimore’s private coat-of-arms. Period.

  8. Mark Veltri says:

The state flag of Maryland is the banner of Baltimore’s coat-of-arms (Calvert, his father’s family, in the first and fourth quarters, and Crossland, his mother’s family, in the second and third quarters).[95]

  9. Mark Currier says:

Ever hear of 6-degress-of-separation? Everything is related to everything else…if you look deep enough. So………ENOUGH already!

  10. Jerry Walton says:

Some in the Confederacy also owned dogs and cats. Do we do away them them also? Geez what a load of liberal lunacy this country is becoming.

  11. They have taken our history, next they will take yours. Slavery flourished under the flag of the United States for over 90 years does that flag offend you.

  12. These Nazis have to stop. You cannot burn away history. These flags were for far more than just slavery. What is wrong with you people. Stop giving these insane people a place to voice their madness.

  13. Did you know the American Flag has roots in the Confederacy? It uses the colors red, white and blue. The racist colors used on the Confederate Battle Flag. Quit stirring up s***.

  14. THIS IS REVISIONIST HISTORY!!! The Maryland flag is entirely represented using the symbolism of the Coat of Arms of Lord Baltimore.

  15. Joe Odegard says:

Maryland’s state flag is one of the coolest state flags of all.

    Complainers take a hike.

  16. This entire country needs a giant enema..

  17. We need to undo the reconciliation that took place after the Civil War in order to have a full blown race war. Confederate soldiers were not our fellow Americans who got caught on the wrong side; they were racist devils. Change the flags and tear down the monuments! Erase every trace of the civil war so we can have another.

    1. And every one of them a DEMOCRAT!

  18. I thought the Russians were going to get us?

  19. Ralph Thayer says:

Somebody is reaching too far and trying too hard to construe the Maryland State Flag as as Confederate or racist. Maryland in general, and Baltimore in particular, have more important things to worry about.

  20. To claim that the modern Maryland flag, which is based upon, rather almost and exact copy or the shield of the First Lord Baltimore, who followed the rules of heraldry in 1625 to create his crest and shield, taking his paternal shield and maternal shield and combining them in quadrants, ought to be banned because it is confederate goes too far. If we follow this logic, we should ban the stars from the American flag because the confederate flag had stars on it. Wait, we should not use the colors red, white, or blue, because these colors appears on the confederate battle flag. Even the French flag, which uses these colors should be declared confederate. Also the Russian flag. Wait, while we are at it, we should burn all flags, depose all governments, and go around hugging everyone! This will lead to world peace!

I have a better idea. How about we stop imposing our values and ideas upon other people and then judging them for their failure to measure up? How about we let a few things pass, accepting that others may have different views and reasons than what we can imagine, and that is OK.

The Modern Maryland flag is probably the prettiest of the state flags, and about the only one that actually was created using the ancient art of heraldry. It harks back to the establishment of the colony and then the state. It is a most fitting symbol for the state.

  21. Roger Trox says:

Massachusetts has a Native American on their flag and a large section of land called Cape Cod. Neither were treated that well, historically speaking. Are we goingf to rename those as well?

  22. This is beyond stupid, crossing over into the absurd.

  23. Amer Ican says:

I have read a lot of articles and comments on this subject. GET OVER IT PEOPLE! Stop rewriting our history. I am sick of it!

  24. These people would burn down the library at Alexandria had the Muzzies not beaten them to it.

  25. Mac Joiner says:

Pretty soon, being born in the south, driving through the south, eating southern cuisine, or having southern friends will be outlawed.

  26. This is so obscure as to be silly. Someone needs more to do.

  27. John Bryan says:

Well, the KKK used the U.S. flag so should we do away with it? They also used the Christian flag. What these idiots need to do is grow some thick skin and stop whining about history. The confederacy happened and it WASN’T all about “freeing the slaves” or even about slavery other than the determination as to whether or not new states could decide to be free or slave or if the federal government made that decision. READ, READ, READ REAL HISTORY nitwits.

  28. Liberal northern idiot. Want to deny there was a civil war that was started by the union.

  29. Maryland has one of the most distinctive and beautiful flags in the world. It would be a shame to change it. In fact, it was ranked 7th best flag by NAVA back in 2001. http://vexillology.wikia.com/wiki/2001_NAVA_survey

  30. Bob Jenkins says:

Texan here. Was in Maryland recently, the flag is so beautiful.

If people don’t like the culture here in the US, they should create their own nasty enclave somewhere or snuff it.

  31. Jeff Smith says:

Maryland’s State Flag is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL of the state flags. Get a life! LET IT BE!

  32. ISIS did the same thing in Iraq! Lets destroy the heritage because we don’t like it or find it offensive! Soon all of history will be re-written by the Liberals into whatever they want it to be. Damn shame the truth gets lost in all of this.

  33. John Oakman says:

Get Ready To Ruuuuuuuuumble——–We are Ready.

  34. tim maguire says:

I think we need some real problems so activists will no longer need to embarrass themselves with petty stupidities like this. In addition to the facts presented here (no Confederate ties to this flag), there is the problem that if you have to “educate” people about the racism behind the symbol for them to see a symbol as racist, then the symbol is not racist.

  35. Andy Engle says:

But which half is the Confederate half?!? I wouldn’t know, and I lived there a number of years.

Oh, I am so offended. Just like everyone else.

  36. The treachery by the Demo-Marxists party is unending. They will not rest until they’ve so distorted our history that our children will have no knowledge or remembrance of anything in their history. The danger posed to this nation by the Demo-Marxist party cannot be overstated.

  37. I am so sick of the libtrards,,,do what the h3ll you want, just keep you progressive a$$ out of my life, keep you welfare state, socialist Obamacare, and your loser illegal dirt bags to yourself.

  38. The Communist Liberal Democrats & Socialist will not rest until they re-write history to their liking. Saddest of all is the truly vile politicians will appease them even though they are a small but vocal group, and will likely knuckle under as always. America was built on recognizing our history and correcting only the mistakes we made as we progressed through time. Those who fought and died their beliefs as did the valiant Confederacy could see the future….any government strong enough to force their will on others (which by the way is prevented, if ignored, by our Constitution and Bill of Rights) is un-Constitutional and should be resisted, to death if necessary. We are there now! But those of us who know and wish history to be remembered as it was, and not as re-written, will and must resist this effort mightily!

  39. Jim ONeill says:

This won’t stop until we start telling these ignorant, spoiled children to just shut the H up.

  40. I read one time a Confederate ate a sandwich – can we just ban sandwiches now?

  41. Winford Sutt says:

i think you fear mongers should just let sleeping dogs lie…..you cannot change history by simply rewriting it in history books…. thank god for the internet and freedom of speech and thought

  42. Alan Whitney says:

So many “Americans” spend their lives looking for something to be angry about. What a bore!

  43. Talk about out of control liberals. The Maryland state flag looks like it belongs in the Vatican.

  44. The Confederate Battle Flag, adopted in 1863, was used by some (not all) Army field units and by the Confederate Navy. It never flew over the seat of the Confederacy. Each Confederate state had its own separate flag that flew over the state capitol, none of which resembled the Confederate Battle Flag, and many units from the various states had their own battle flag. Until May of 1863, the official flag of the Confederacy was the “stars and bars” that is very similar to the U.S. flag (blue banner with white stars arranged in a circle) with red and white horizontal stripes. It was replaced in 1863 by a solid white banner with the battle flag in the upper left corner. In 1865, a red vertical stripe was added to the flag’s right-hand border. The Confederate Battle Flag incorporates St. Andrew’s cross. It is an exact replica of the blue St. Andrew’s cross used on Scotland’s flag and was incorporated into the UK’s Union Jack. Britain’s flag, before Scotland was added, included only a standard Christian cross. Many of the South’s settlers were of Scott and Scott-Irish ancestry, hence the use of St. Andrew’s cross. Alabama and Florida still use the St. Andrew’s cross on their Stae flags. It’s origins go much further back than the Confederacy.

  45. Kyle Lewin says:

In other news, Confederate soldiers wore gray uniforms, so the color gray should also be outlawed because of this association. They also wore hats, so no more head coverings. Plus, I think a few might have been named Steve, so we should definitely get rid of that name.

  46. who gives a rat’s ass what you liberal idiots think. you cannot change history. learn from it. the south is great whether you like it or not.

  47. “Every year approx. 6000 blacks are murdered. This is greater than white and Hispanic homicide victims combined, even though blacks are only 13% of the national population.
Blacks are killed at 6x the rate of whites and Hispanics combined. In LA, blacks between the ages of 20-24 die at a rate 20-30x the national mean. Who is killing them? Not the police, and not white civilians, but other blacks.
Black males between the ages of 14-17 commit homicide at 10x the rate of white and Hispanic male teens combined.
Blacks of all ages commit homicide at 8x the rate of whites and Hispanics combined, and 11x the rate of whites alone.
The police could end all lethal uses of force and it would have at most a trivial effect on the black death-by-homicide rate.
The nation’s police killed 987 civilians in 2015 according to a database compiled by the Washington Post. Whites were 50% – or 493 – of those victims and blacks were 26% – or 258. Most of these, white and black, were armed or otherwise threatening the officer with potentially lethal force. The black crime rate would actually predict that more than 26% of police victims would be black.
In America’s 75 largest counties in 2009, blacks constituted 62% of all robbery defendants, 57% of all murder defendants, 45% of all assault defendants – but only 15% of the population.
40% of all cop killers have been black over the last decade.
A larger proportion of white and Hispanic homicide deaths are a result of police killings.
12% of all white and Hispanic homicide victims are killed by police, compared to 4% of all black homicide victims.
Blacks make up 23% of NYC’s population, but they commit 75% of all shootings, 70% of all robberies, and 66% of all violent crime, according to victims and witnesses. Add Hispanic shootings and you account for 98% of all illegal gunfire in the city. Whites are 33% of the population, but they commit fewer than 2% of all shootings, 4% of all robberies and 5% of all violent crime.
In Brownsville, Brooklyn, the per capita shooting rate is 81x higher than in nearby Bay Ridge, Brooklyn – the 1st neighborhood predominantly black, the second predominantly white and Asian. As a result, police presence and use of proactive tactics are much higher in Brownsville than in Bay Ridge. Every time there is a shooting, police will flood the area looking to make stops in order to avert a retaliatory shooting. They are in Brownsville not because of racism, but because they want to provide protection to its many law-abiding residents who deserve safety.
In NYC in 1990, for example, there were 2245 homicides. In 2014 there were 333 – a decrease of 85%. NYC’s drop is the steepest in the nation, but crime has fallen nationwide as well – by about 40% – since the early 1990s. The greatest beneficiaries of this decline have been minorities. Over 10,000 minority males alive today in NYC would be dead if the city’s homicide rate had remained at its early 1990s level.
In 2016 our country was in the midst of the first sustained violent crime spike in 2 decades. Murders rose nearly 17% in the nation’s 50 largest cities in 2015, and it was in cities with large black populations where the violence increased the most. Baltimore’s per capita homicide rate in 2015 was the highest in history. Milwaukee had its deadliest year in a decade, with a 72% increase in homicides. Homicides in Cleveland increased 90% over the previous year. Murders rose 83% in Nashville, 54% in Washington DC and 61% in Minneapolis. In Chicago, where pedestrian stops are down by 90%, shootings were up 80% through March 2016.
The number of police officers killed in shootings more than doubled during the first 3 months of 2016. In fact, officers are at much greater risk from blacks than unarmed blacks are from the police. Over the last decade, an officer’s chance of getting killed by a black has been 18.5x higher than the chance of an unarmed black getting killed by a cop.”

It’s a shame to see “progressives” try to magically wish this away like so many other issues, while wasting everybody’s time revising history and ridding us of all historical symbols of slavery and the Civil War. Maybe instead they should try addressing the root causes of black-on-black crime and poverty. Then again, reason and logic have never, EVER appealed to the Left.

  48. Ray Rooks says:

This is crazy! When will the lunacy of this anti American view stop? The Maryland State Flag is a reunion flag. The 5th Regiment was a unified command of former soldiers of the North and the South. The flag was adopted by them as a reunion flag that honor soldiers of both side. The citizens of the state loved the flag, removed the 5 and made it our state flag. People today could learn a great deal from those who adopted the flag as a reconciliation of former combatants who were shooting at each other in war. Remember Diversity for all means everybody.

  49. The Washington DC Flag and License Plate are the coat of arms of a slave plantation, but nobody seems to care about that.

  50. Dusty Rhodes says:

It is impossible to say, do or create anything that is not offensive to someone either now or in the future. I suggest Mr Savage put on his tinfoil hat and move on.

  51. Jerry Rowe says:

All this history revisionism, trying to erase the past, is VERY dangerous. It is EXACTLY what happened in the book 1984 by George Orwell, where the STATE erased everything they did not like and did not want you to know. That is where we get the terms “Big Brother”, “Ministry of Truth”, and more from. In the book all history was erased that was not in line with the official mantra of the current (maybe tyrannical) government.

Hiding and redefining history is what governments like “Big Brother” do to make you ignorant. Once they achieve hiding anything (for your own good of course), they can hide anything (for THEIR own good of course).

Don’t be stupid and fall for this scheme. You will not like the end result.
Except of course, you will not know what it is and that it is wrong. Big Brother is NEVER wrong.

  55. Charlie Doe says:

  56. What else can we expect from the first generation in history that is turning over a worse country to their kids and grandkids than they inherited from their own parents and grandparents. In fact, post-American liberals are putting America right down the memory hole.

But they had a grand old time feelin’ groovy. And that’s all that matters. Right, comrades?

  57. As with all progressive themes, erasing history, re-writing history, trying to hide their own deep, deep involvement in slavery and segregation and the laws against gun ownership for non-whites, this is another attempt to tear down anything and everything from the “old order.” Regardless of whether Maryland wanted to secede or not, the flag belongs to Maryland and should not be changed.

The heck with you progressives. I won’t march into the night towards your Communist Utopia.

  58. Does not matter, Union or Confederate, what should be the focus is Maryland’s history, stop the cleansing of history before we have none left,

  59. Jim O'Neill says:

Reporting from my safe space bunker: OMG we also need to get rid of all the black eyed susans and those racist rock fish that swim up from the south every year. How dare they! Oh yeah and every thing cotton has got to go, bring back polyester the all-inclusive fabric.

  60. Carter Gwynn says:

Maryland flag square like Confederate flag. A not so subtle dog whistle to white supremacists.

  61. skep41 says:

What a hot, steaming pile of Prog horse dookey. This is just the SJWs making up some far-fetched nonusense to force everyone to do what they say. It isn’t the Stars And Bars and it long predates the Civil War. No one has ever looked at the Maryland state flag as the banner of slavery. If Maryland lets itself be bullied into changing its flag, what’s next?

  62. Pat Denoli says:

If I understand what’s being written, this is a misleading article. It sounds as though portions of the Maryland flag (not even the whole thing) was co-opted by confederate soldiers who added other elements and used it to communicate their origins. The flag itself was never a symbol of the confederacy (as the headline and theme of the article suggests). Some of the confederate soldiers also rode horses, are horses now a symbol of the confederacy and dog-whistle support of slavery? A little sanity would be nice, too bad it won’t be had.

  63. Mike Houck says:

It’s obvious that the only valid action for an honest person to take is to drag that racist flag through the gutter and then set the bith on fire.
Extra points if you can steal a flag from a public building or the front porch of a neighbor.

  64. Tom Reiber says:

Well gee, using these criteria, we need to ban the Calif flag as well, considering it was a State during the Civil war.
Yeah, I know, ludicrous, but then, so is wanting to remove a symbol of a State and its history.

You know what we really need to remove?
These morons that keep trying to erase America’s history, and the fact that even after the North won, it refused to abolish slavery in its own territory.

No, it was never about slavery.

  65. When are people going to start requesting the name Brown be erased from Rhode Island history because a good portion or their fortune came from the slave trade.

  66. Jeffrey Gee says:

Idiots, 1st off it isn’t the National Confederate flag, which looks much different than the battle flag AKA Stars and Bars they are trying to correlate it too. The battle flag is actually modeled off of Saint Andrews Cross or the Scottish National Flag.

  70. Aaron Smith says:

  71. Oh my word. STAAAAHHP. If you have to go into a detailed, convoluted explanation of how it has Confederate “ties”, then chances are NO ONE is aware of it; and thus, NO ONE could possibly be “triggered” by it. Stop. The. Madness.

  72. Another opportunity for American-hating liberals to change our nation’s history. The flag isn’t the problem–it’s the mindset of the ignorant and uneducated. Bet those bedwetting libs in College Park are the first to make a change with the flag.

  75. Lincoln had to sent troops into Maryland as they were sympathetic to the south and he rightfully feared that the District of Columbia would be surrounded by the enemy.

  76. Meanwhile , out here in the rest of the world………nobody cares….really? slow news day?

  77. So let’s work this thing.
Black and yellow were the colors of the Calvert family. No problem there.
Loyal Marylanders, post 1861, flew the black-and-yellow.
Confederate Marylanders, in an effort to say “We’re not them”, flew the distaff family’s colors in a particular pattern.

So the attribution of the red/white bottony pattern as “slavery” seems to be based more on juxtaposition (we’re not them) than any pure racist intent.

Was anyone outside of the Maryland area even aware of this until now? I’d never heard of it.

I’m going to say the flag is not racist at its heart. The use of the red/white pattern by Johnny Reb was purely happenstance, a matter of convenience.

  78. When are we going to rename McDonogh School in Owings Mills? It is the namesake of a New Orleans slave owner. In fact, the names of McDonogh Road and the whole McDonogh area are an embarrassment.

  79. And now I understand Freddie Gray and Marilyn Mosby. Freddie Gray was trying to bring this shameful flag history to the public and the racist white president had him killed.

  80. Carl Kaminer says:

For shame, Maryland, for shame. I bet you drink iced tea and eat grits, too. For shame.

  81. Oh for the love of GOD! There is a segment of the US population that really needs to get over itself. The historical monstrosity that was slavery ended over 150 years ago. No one alive today was ever a slave and no one alive today was ever a slave owner. Get over yourself, people! If you are so against slavery, go to the middle east and africa where it is still commonplace today. Oh wait, there is no money to be made or no “freebes” to be garnered in doing that. So bottom line: quit your bellyaching and get with the program.

  82. Sam Focer says:

Democrats are trying to remove this stain on their history. The last time the KKK beat and murdered people was when Republican kids were signing Blacks up to vote in Dixiecrat land.

  83. the Democrats have fully embraced “hate whitey” as their rallying cry. This goes way beyond Confederate flag, but in the liberal’s mind nothing is more white than something related to the Confederacy.

  84. John Dillon says:

Well, the ISIS supporters are making it very obvious on their way of thinking. Anyone else want to destroy the losers in a war after you’ve won? We might as well put the Japanese in camps now because they fought against us in WW2. Better yet, get rid of any Germans while we’re at it. They were on the side of the Nazis so they need to go. I can go on. Let’s go back to the Crusades. The moors were obviously right so get rid of all Christians now .

  85. Wacko progressive’s next target. Mt. Vernon, home of owner George. Burn it down. Next, erase Jefferson’s face off all currency.

  86. Paul Rodgers says:

If you have to go through paragraphs to explain the “connection,” then there is NO connection……

  87. Libs want absolute power and try to rewrite history so that our citizens won’t know revolt is even possible. The most controllable population is one that knows nothing but being controlled, and accepts that as an immutable, unquestioned condition of existence.

  88. Cajuan King says:

Give the underclass one iota of knowledge that they never had before, and they go apes3hit with it !

  89. I would be more upset about the 5 public schools in Baltimore that not did reach the minimum standards for the state this year. These schools are in a predominant ethnic neighborhood. The teachers are mainly substituting because the turnover of regular staff is so obnoxiously high.

Second, the Maryland flag represents the Carrolton family. The Carrolton family settled in what is known as St. Mary’s County. The English monarch gave Carrolton the land because of Roman Catholic Discrimination in England. Maryland was carved out to be a haven for Catholics. St. Elizabeth Anne Seton came to Maryland to escape the hatred of her elite Anglican friends in NYC. She built a fine school for girls in the early 1800s that later developed into one of the first female colleges in the US.

Third, the flag represents the coat of arms or battle colors for the Carroltons. The other do Hickey is a loosely St. George’s cross. My local paper did a profile of one of the remaining Carrols. He was homeless and living in a cardboard box….satisfied.

Lord, fix the problem at hand and teach reality.

  90. Boy, I am steamed up today like a Blue Crab. Why does no one ever mention the amount of harm the Baltimore Riots of two years ago did to the community? A new senior center was destroyed as well as an AIDS clinic. The fun part about the research is that you don’t have to go to the archives to dig up the mess. It is right on this website.

My Lord, deal with the problems at hand. You feel so strongly over history’s ugliness teach a kid how to read, math or science.

Here if you are looking for a fight, I’ll toss you a bone. Something I was taught in school, the British used to trade native Americans small pox laced blankets. The blankets came from the conscripted poor blokes or Irish that died from the disease.

  91. Reed Smith says:

Give leftists a toehold, and they will blow the door down eventually to whitewash/eliminate history…rewriting it if necessary.

  92. Wm Layer says:

Well, the morons are at it again. Why not go after the Stars and Stripes, after all slavery existed a lot longer under it than it ever did under any Confederate flag. What we are seeing is the true spirit of the “progressives” , their ambition to abolish the nation by obliterating historical memory. Quite Orwellian, and just as evil. Guilty as they are of sedition those who parrot their vile fictions are brainless.

  93. swanspirit says:

You want to turn Maryland, from a blue state, to a red state? Go ahead, go after our flag. We already have a Republican governor, and a great deal of this state already is bright red. So go ahead. Try it.

  94. It’s heraldry-the only US state flag to have it, I believe. Apparently the Confederacy was a lot older than I thought.

  95. This article shows the lunacy of the left. By the author’s reasoning, if some group in the south during the war used the american flag as its colors, then we should destroy the flag and call it racist?

once again, the left shows how morally bankrupt they are by making up things that they can attack.

The left shows how in touch they are with the Taliban, how everything they even think has something to do with something they do not like, they seek to destroy it, no matter how much a part of history it is

  96. From the PC fools who want to tear down every statue of Confederate soldiers and commanders, to the idiots who want to do away with the Stars and Bars of the Confederate flag, to the morons who want to regulate our language so that no one could possibly be offended, we are surrounded by folks who just want to rewrite history to fit a modern day progressive narrative that is the invention of those who want to control how others think by controlling what they can see and say. They are the Fascists!

  97. This is just plane stupid………. Getting really tired of Fake Connections to the Confederacy. No credibility what so ever.

  98. You want more Trump? This is how you get more Trump.

  99. John Crane says:

How is this going to stop all the killings on Baltimore streets? It won’t…it’s just another distraction.

  100. The left has gone completely nuts. One wonders when people will get tired of their incessant whining
