BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Lucky number 700. For the first time ever, the countries two largest lotteries total at nearly $700 million in winnings.
Both the Mega Millions and Power Ball jackpots now have prizes topping $300 million each, at the same time.
While these number are less than the record $1.6 billion from a few years ago, this is still rich news to the community. Stores in Baltimore remain busy as people pass through to purchase what they hope to be the winning ticket.
In the last fiscal year, the Maryland State Lottery fund saw a record of nearly $2 billion in sales. Nearly 30 percent of the money goes back into the general fund, which supports education, the environment, and more.
Lottery players near Baltimore’s Canton Market were asked, “What would you do with nearly $700 million?”
“I’m going to pay all of my bills, and I’m going to get some animal sanctuaries,” says lottery player Jacueline Ruane.
Others say they will buy cars and houses, but many people have big plans for this jackpot.
Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing is for $307 million, or about 193 million if you choose the lump sum option. Officials believe the number could swell into the $350 million range if no one selects all six numbers.
Also, officials say that if you are the lucky person, the first thing you should do is sign the back of your ticket.
The next Mega Millions drawing is on Friday, August 11.
