Police Officer Shot In Hand In South Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Baltimore police confirmed that a police officer was shot in the hand in Cherry Hill Wednesday night.

Authorities confirmed the shooting occurred in the 800 block of Bridgeview Road, where a struggle ensued between two officers and the suspect after police say a suspect exhibited signs of carrying a gun.

The suspect's gun went off, striking one of the officers in the hand. The other officer were able to "tase" the suspect where he was then taken into custody.

The officer has been taken to Shock Trauma with non life-threatening injuries.

"The gunman discharge one round and struck one of our two police officers in the palm of his hand, close to the meaty area, it's a through and through gunshot wound, it's non life-threatening, he's going to be OK," Baltimore police commissioner Kevin Davis said.

The suspect is a repeat offender, according to police.

Mayor Catherine Pugh spoke to WJZ outside of Shock Trauma after the visiting the wounded officer after being present at Detective Sean Suiter's funeral Wednesday.

"When officers leave their home, their families homes go with them because they pray that they get to come back home and fortunately this officer will get to go home," Pugh said.

Davis said the incident was captured on police body camera video.

The injured officer is 30 years old and in good spirits. He said he doesn't want to be put on desk duty, police say.

The officer who used his taser sustained minor injuries.
