Police Investigating After Baltimore Ambulance Struck By Gunfire
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police are investigating after an ambulance was struck by gunfire in northwest Baltimore Wednesday morning.
"The good thing is that none of our medics were injured, and we're very appreciative of that," said Blair Skinner, a fire department spokeswoman, told our media partners at The Baltimore Sun.
Police said the incident happened just before 10 a.m., in the 2900 block of Wynham Rd.
The ambulance was reportedly in the area on a call when it was struck. One of the ambulance's windows was shattered by at least one bullet.
Emergency recordings captured the frightening moments as EMTs called for help.
"I have a subject on the street with a rifle. We're going to be vacating the area to a safe distance."
"I need a status on PD and another transport unit we have a bullet hole in our ambulance."
"You said you have?"
"You said, you have a bullet hole in your engine? A bullet hole in our ambulance with a patient. I need another transport unit. I have people shooting in the area."
The firefighters union said the EMT's were inside a home when the suspect started shooting.
Officers say they took one person into custody and it may have started from an argument.
The union does not believe the shooter was aiming for the first responders.
It's not the first time Baltimore medics have been under attack.
Last year, union leaders called for protective gear after several attacks on medics in recent years.
Two female medics were attacked by a naked man.
"That's just a sign of the times. It's crazy, people just doing anything and everything," Baltimore resident Al Spruell said.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
