Maryland Man Gets 10 Years For Dogfighting, Credit Card Fraud
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A Maryland man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy and a separate credit card fraud scheme.
Thirty-one-year-old Rodriguez Norman of Temple Hills, Maryland, pleaded guilty to multiple charges in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
Prosecutors say Norman bred and trained dogs for fighting throughout Maryland and Virginia.
When he was arrested in August, police found shock collars, whips, a blood-stained fighting ring and a noose-like contraption used to hang dogs by their neck to build muscle.
The 10-year sentenced imposed Friday by Judge Leonie Brinkema nearly matched the 12-year sentence sought by prosecutors. One year of the ten was attributable to the dogfighting; the rest related to the fraud.
Lawyers for Norman, a former substitute teacher in Virginia Beach, sought a 5-year sentence.
