An adult male was shot in the 4700-block of Liberty Heights Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

He has serious injuries.

Homicide units have been notified.

Tuesday, Maryland’s Emergency Medical Services Awards were given to first responders who rose to that challenge.

Nominated by peers for rescues performed in 2012, awards were also given to children like 11-year-old Nathan Haupt.

When his little sister’s shirt caught fire, he forced her to stop, drop and roll.

“At one of my schools we always had firefighters come and they always told us what to do and taught us how,” Haupt said.

The awards are Maryland’s observance of EMS Week, an event honoring the nation’s 750,000 EMS providers.

The Thunder announced Tuesday that they’ll give $1 million to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other disaster relief organizations helping after Monday’s disaster in suburban Oklahoma City. Earlier in the day, Durant pledged $1 million to the Red Cross from his Durant Family Foundation intended to match other donations and be an incentive for more people to give.

Red Cross’ regional CEO Janienne Bella said the organization was thankful for Durant’s “generosity.”

“The feeling is they’re going to be a desperate team in their own building,” Bruins forward Shawn Thornton said on Monday before the team departed for New York. “We’re going to have to be a lot better than we were last game; we got the win but we had some areas we could improve on.”

The Bruins won both games in Boston, but were far from perfect. In Game 1 they let New York score in the final seconds of the second period to tie the game at 1-1, and gave up a go-ahead goal just 14 seconds into the third. In Game 2, New York answered each of Boston’s first two goals within minutes, and the Bruins turned the puck over 16 times.

New York hasn’t capitalized on many of Boston’s mistakes so far, but that can all change now that the series shifts to New York.

“A lot of that stuff was of our own doing,” head coach Claude Julien said of the Game 2 turnovers. “I think we can be better in that area, although we played a pretty game, I think most of those things came in the second period. We just have to be a little bit better. I thought our third period was much better in regards to puck management.”

Both teams will make some adjustments, but Julien stressed it doesn’t matter as much what the desperate Rangers will do, but more if his Bruins play their brand of hockey.

“I think it’s what we expect from ourselves. That’s the thing, we always worry about the other team; we need to worry about ourselves,” he said. “When we play well, we’re a good team and we give ourselves a chance to win. It’s more about our expectations right now, that has to be the important topic for us. We need to, obviously, understand they’re going to be better. We also need to be better. We’re on the road, we don’t get the last change, so it will be a tougher situation.”

“It is a chess match, but you can’t be thinking too much on the ice,” said center Patrice Bergeron. “You have to trust your instincts and your system.”

Though Boston has the upper hand now, the series is far from over. The Rangers found themselves down 2-0 to the Washington Capitals last series before storming back to take the series in seven games. The Bruins owned a 3-1 series lead over the Maple Leafs before losing two straight and needed an amazing Game 7, third-period comeback and eventually overtime to advance.

“It’s about realizing the series is not over until you win that fourth game. We know that,” Bergeron said. “They’re going to try to bounce back, and we’re expecting them to come out really hard. We need to make sure we match that.”

Jessica Kartalija has more on disaster relief efforts being made in Maryland.

The destruction left behind by the tornado in the Midwest has Maryland Red Cross volunteers, like Sherry Rubin, on stand-by.

“I am waiting for someone to say ‘OK, pack your bag and go,’” Rubin said.

Nationally, the Red Cross has already deployed 25 mobile help centers.

“We go in listening because sometimes people just want someone to talk to aside from the other things we do, which is client case work and sheltering,” Rubin said.

The National Red Cross does an assessment of damage before calling on chapters for help.

“The Red Cross in Oklahoma has set up six shelters, and we have emergency response vehicles on the ground distributing food and much needed items like toiletries and things like that,” said Doug Lent, Red Cross Oklahoma.

In Cockeysville, the Red Cross is putting together comfort kits that include tooth brushes, soap and shampoo.

“We haven’t accomplished anything,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. “We didn’t get our work done in LA, and that put us behind the eight ball. The fact that we win Game 3, that’s great, but we still are behind in the series and the series is getting shorter. The lifeline wasn’t as long as it was in the past. We’ve just got to find a way to get even. If our intensity or urgency drops because we’ve won a single game, I would be disappointed in our group.”

After taking it easy the day after San Jose’s 2-1 win, both teams stepped up preparation on Monday in advance of Game 4 on Tuesday night at the Shark Tank.

The Kings aren’t about to feel complacent, considering they were less than 2 minutes away from losing Game 2 at home and have won just once in 10 road games since March.

“We can’t rest and just be comfortable with being a good home team,” forward Justin Williams said. “We need to be killers on the road. Coming back with a 3-1 lead is certainly something we’re going to do our darnedest to do.”

The Kings came close to getting that elusive road win in Game 3 on Saturday when they fell in overtime after being called for two penalties in the final minute of regulation to set up Logan Couture’s power-play goal in overtime.

The second of those penalties particularly irked the Kings, who contend Trevor Lewis was pushed into San Jose goalie Antti Niemi by Patrick Marleau and shouldn’t have been called for goaltender interference.

That came one game after the Sharks complained about a late delay of game call on Marc-Edouard Vlasic that gave the Kings a two-man advantage and eventually led to two goals that gave Los Angeles a 4-3 win.

The Kings look to rebound from their disappointment the same way the Sharks did from theirs.

“There’s zero momentum,” Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. “Once you get in the playoffs, there’s zero momentum unless somebody is way better than somebody, and as you see, nobody is. If there’s a carry-over, then you’re probably not a playoff team.”

The home teams have won all three games so far this series and both teams are undefeated at home in the postseason this year. The Sharks have been dominant all season on home ice, going 17-2-5 in the regular season that included two wins over Los Angeles.

The biggest reason for the home success has been a potent power play that has been far more efficient at the Shark Tank than on the road. San Jose has scored on an NHL-best 28.4 percent of power plays at home during the regular and postseason compared to just 13.6 percent on the road.

The difference has been even more stark in the postseason where the Sharks are 8-for-20 on the power play at home and just 1-for-16 on the road, including 0-for-7 the first two games in Los Angeles. San Jose did score one goal 5 seconds after the end of a power play in Game 2 against the Kings.

Defenseman Dan Boyle said there was little difference other than the final results on the power play in Game 3, when he got the scoring started with a power-play goal 4 seconds into a man advantage early in the first period and Couture ended the game with a power-play goal in overtime.

“It’s about scoring goals,” Boyle said. “If we don’t score yesterday, you guys would be talking about how bad we are, how much we’re struggling. We had some good looks in L.A., we just didn’t put the puck in the net. The one goal we had, the penalty had just expired.

“The end of the day, you’ve just got to put the puck in the net and the first power play took, what? Three or four seconds. That’s not a good power play, that’s execution. It’s a won faceoff, it’s a guy going to the net. That’s just good execution.”

The Kings could get a boost with the potential return of forward Kyle Clifford, who has missed the past four games with an upper-body injury.

Clifford scored three of his seven regular-season goals this year against the Sharks and all three of his career playoff goals came in a six-game series against San Jose two years ago.

“He can give us that big physical, emotional lift that we can use right now,” forward Colin Fraser said. “He’s a guy that doesn’t take a shift off, and he’s hard to play against. I’ve played with him on and off for two years, and he’s a big, physical player who keeps it simple. You know what you’re going to get out of him every shift.”

A speeding Ford explorer ran through a residential neighborhood near an elementary school playground.  Moments later, an unmarked police car followed with three officers looking for the suspects.

WJZ soon learned the suspects were trying to steal a generator from a Habitat for Humanity home under renovation a block away.

Workers and the unmarked police officers spotted the thieves in action.

The generator was already loaded in the back of the truck when the thieves took off with the lift gate open.  A few feet away, the generator flew out of the fleeing vehicle along with a stash of other items, including bolt cutters, crowbars, stereo equipment and other construction tools.

Police say it’s likely that some of the goods may be stolen.

Volunteers working on the Habitat for Humanity home were shocked.

The team that came to Baltimore from Pennsylvania say they will not let thieves stop them from trying to make this neighborhood a better place.

A team leader who lives in the neighborhood simply said “I will pray for them.”

Patrick Kane scored 4:35 into the third period to pull Chicago within one. The Blackhawks celebrated as if they tied the game about a minute later, but Andrew Shaw’s goal was waved off because he was in the crease.

Datsyuk’s goal 6:46 into the final period gave the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.

The seventh-seeded Red Wings have a shot to put the top-seeded Blackhawks on the brink of elimination Thursday night in Game 4.

Detroit’s Jimmy Howard made 39 saves and Corey Crawford stopped 27 shots.

Chicago has lost consecutive games for the first time in nearly two months.

The Blackhawks began the lockout-shortened season by setting an NHL record with at least a point in their first 24 games, ended it with a league-high 77 points and avoided having a three-game losing streak during the 48-game campaign.

After a scoreless first period in a hot and steamy Joe Louis Arena, Detroit took a 2-0 lead with a pretty goal and a gritty one.

Nyquist patiently carried the puck from right to left and waited for defenseman Brent Seabrook and Crawford to sprawl out to make a shot before shooting the puck.

Miller crashed the net to stuff the puck into the net after Patrick Eaves got to his own rebound to keep pressure on Crawford. Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival started the sequence with a turnover in the Chicago end.

It was a sixth straight goal for the Red Wings, who lost the opener 4-1 and gave up the first goal of Game 2 before going on to even the series with a 4-1 victory.

Chicago escaped getting shut out when Duncan Keith lifted the puck up the ice, over and past Detroit’s defense and Kane got to it in time to beat Howard with a low shot.

Datsyuk gave the Red Wings a comfortable cushion again, getting off a wrist shot from the left side that went in and out of the net before Crawford saw it.

NOTES: Detroit coach Mike Babcock won his 77th postseason game, matching Chicago’s Joel Quenneville for the most among active coaches and trailing Pat Burns by one victory for 8th place on the NHL’s all-time list. … Chicago hasn’t given up a power play goal in its first eight playoff games, matching the 2001 St. Louis Blues for the longest such streak since 1988, according to STATS. … The Blackhawks put Viktor Stalberg back in the lineup, and scratched Daniel Carcillo, and he got shook up early in the game, missing a check and going head first into the boards.

During the holiday’s they have no trouble filling the warehouse at the Maryland Food Bank.

“We’re happy to get food in the summer, in the spring and in the summer because you know we get so much food around Thanksgiving and Christmas, you know because people think people are only hungry around Thanksgiving and Christmas. But they’re hungry year-round,” said Beth Wedeking of the Maryland Food Bank.

So, what does that have to do with stacked cans of food at the White Marsh Mall?

“Well it’s called Lilly Pad Lunch. Most of it, all of it, gets donated to the Maryland Food Bank,” said Christina Sean of Hord Coplan Macht, Inc Architects.

Part art, part philanthropy, and all good.

“They got together to figure out how many cans, how many boxes they need,” said Sean.

Sculptures made of food. There are three of these Lilly Pad lunches, slice of cake and girl scout cookies, all designed by local architectural firms.

The display draws attention to the Maryland Food Bank.

“Really we just wanted to promote awareness to the food bank and the fact that now donations are low, and it’s a time when people should come out, donate to the food bank to people who don’t have it,” said Lisa Bisenius, manager at White Marsh Mall.

Through this weekend there is a vote for the favorite sculpture.

Of course, the Maryland Food Bank always needs food, but what they really need now is volunteers to help pack and sort the food as right now they’re adding extra shifts.

On average the food bank receives 11 tons of food per week.

The casino in Anne Arundel County announced Tuesday that the poker room will be 14,800 square feet.

The casino says it’s scheduled to open late this summer. Maryland Live! says it will be one of the largest poker rooms in the mid-Atlantic region. It will have more than 50 tables and a dedicated area for tournament play.

The casino says adding the card game will create more than 200 new jobs. Maryland Live! currently has 122 live table games, including blackjack, craps, roulette and other games.

The school and the county sheriff’s office signed an agreement Monday, a week after the college’s Board of Trustees voted to approve arming campus officers.

Executive Vice President of Administration Alan Schuman says arming officers will better protect the campus during critical situations.

The majority of the six full-time officers are retired law enforcement officers with experience carrying a firearm. They will be armed when the program is instituted in the next few months.

The college’s Office of Public Safety and Security will have jurisdiction over minor property crimes, alcohol violations and disorderly conduct complaints. The sheriff’s office will investigate violent crimes, missing persons reports and all drug violations.

The Orioles vs. Rays game Sunday was a perfect example of why replay needs to be fixed… The call was the correct one, a Tampa home run that hit the black painted part of the foul pole.. BUT the way they got there was a total joke. It’s like getting lost for an hour, ending up where you wanted only because you ran out of wrong roads to take. Nearly ten minutes of arguments via both managers and replay being looked at by who knows how many people.

Get a guy in each stadium or a few in master control to review live during the normal flow of the game. Take the preconceived notion out of nfl replay as the measuring stick. It’s not going to be a reg flag, under the hood system. People against MLB replay say its too slow and will delay an already long sporting event, the Rays homer would have been called correctly in 90 sec not this 10 minutes nonsense. Make the change now & get better right away.

Every tight play or close call is being looked at in real time and looked at again before a skipper can take a step out of the dugout, a signal to the field with the proper call is sent and the game moves on.

Same example Monday versus the Yankees. Wieters picked off Gardner at 1st then at his at bat was called out on a base hit at 1st. Both calls were WRONG! Gardner was called safe & Wieters out. Both could have been rectified in seconds with a guy in the booth or several in “master control” run by the league.

The umps are a major problem despite getting much correct over the span of a game, but why not get better?

I don’t understand the hesitation to push it forward. I’m not asking for laser beams or robots calling balls and strikes, just another set of eyes to make things better.

But prosecutors still will try to convict Pfc. Bradley Manning at his trial next month of other serious offenses, including aiding the enemy, which carries a maximum life sentence.

Army Maj. Ashden Fein told the military judge, Col. Denise Lind, that prosecutors had changed their minds about trying to convict Manning of violating the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in connection with the release of a State Department cable known as Reykjavik-13. WilkiLeaks posted the cable in early 2010 about a meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland, summarizing U.S. Embassy discussions with Icelandic officials about the country’s financial troubles.

Manning has acknowledged sending the cable to WikiLeaks after he found it on a secure government computer network while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq. According to his courtroom confession on Feb. 28, Manning believed the cable indicated the United States was refusing to help the Icelandic government “due to the lack of long-term geopolitical benefit.”

The cable was the basis for a charge alleging violation of a federal law, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Manning pleaded guilty in February to lesser versions of that and other offenses, acknowledging violations of military law that, in total, carry maximum prison term of 20 years. Prosecutors said in March they would continue to seek conviction for the more serious offenses.

Fein did not give a reason for the change.

Manning’s trial is scheduled to begin June 3.

“This is a great year for family cars,” said Jack Nerad, Kelly Blue Book’s executive market analyst. “There are some new entries in the marketplace that are terrific. Some of the old standbys are also terrific.”

At the top of the list, the Nissan Pathfinder.

“It’s new this year, and we were really taken by the Pathfinder,” said Nerad.

The largest category on the list is mid-size cars. There were four of these vehicles including, says Nerad, the all-new Ford Fusion.

“It’s a very, high-tech vehicle, and offers good looks on the outside and creature comforts on the inside,” says Nerad.

There was only one other American brand vehicle on the list, and it was an interesting choice. Nerad says they included the Chevy Suburban because big families need big vehicles.

“There are a lot of people, my family among them, that like a large vehicle like that, that has great hauling power, great passenger capacity,” says Nerad.

The institute has been running vehicles through a small vehicle frontal overlap crash test, simulating what happens when about 25 percent of the vehicle’s front hits an object.

The latest test crashed 13 small SUVs.

“The bad news is 11 of the 13 did pretty poorly,” said Insurance Institute Research Vice President Joe Nolan. “We only have one good performer, and one acceptable performer.”

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport received the “Acceptable” rating. The “Good” rating went to another vehicle made by a smaller Japanese car company.

“The Subaru Forester aced this test,” said Nolan. “It’s the first vehicle to do so in this new crash configuration. In every evaluation of the structural performance, the way the dummy interacts with the restraint system, and all of the injury measures, it scored perfect scores.”

That gives the Subaru Forester the designation of “Top Safety Pick+.” There are now 20 vehicles with that “plus” by their designation. Vehicles that score well in other crash tests, but not the new one, get a designation of “Top Safety Pick.”

Many of the small SUVs in this test remain top safety picks including the new Buick Encore and the totally redone Honda CRV and Ford Escape.

But, Nolan says all could be made safer, if strengthened for this new collision. The Ford Escape, for example, showed some issues that could lead to serious injuries.

“We recorded over three thousand pounds of force going through the driver’s left leg into his hip,” said Nolan. “That’s a poor rating for the protection of the knee, thigh, hip complex. That’s a potentially very debilitating injury.”

The Escape has set new sales records for Ford, which says it believes the vehicle is safe.

“Ford takes seriously every industry development related to vehicle crash performance,” read a statement from the company. “This is the first time IIHS has conducted this type of test on small SUVs. We are reviewing its findings in the context of our current design evaluations. The Escape was rated ‘Good’ for head/neck and chest dummy injury measures and ‘Acceptable’ for lower-leg/foot in this new test.”

The IIIHS says the purpose of the new test is to make vehicles safer. Institute officials say they believe carmakers will work to build vehicles that can pass the test. Nolan says that will save lives, and prevent injuries.

“Our analysis shows that about a quarter of all crashes that result in serious injury or fatality are what we call, small overlap frontal crashes.”

A little bigger and much more upscale, the Cadenza is Kia’s first attempt at keeping that customer who wants to move up from moving out of a Kia store and into somebody else’s entry level luxury sedan. So the first question is, how did they do?

After spending a day rolling around the hills outside of San Diego, the short verdict is not bad.

The Cadenza is a sharp looking car with the distinctive front grille and lamp treatment made a bit more distinctive. A sharp profile with well placed lines and an athletic looking stance give way to a fairly Audi-esque looking rear complete with oval dual exhaust ports.

High marks on fit and finish inside

Inside, the Cadenza gets high marks on fit and finish as well as materials. A 10-way power driver’s seat with heating and cooling and six-way passenger seat with just heating come with the car. The rear seats are also heated. Legroom is more than ample, especially in the rear when they put that extra two inches they stretched the platform.

The dash is well laid out, logical, and Kia’s UVO e-services system is among the best in the business. It takes connecting you to the car to a new level. It also comes with a 10-year free subscription and smartphone app. The fully loaded Cadenza I spent the day in also included a spectacular Infinity sound system and panoramic sunroof.

Under the hood and the drive feel

Under the hood the Cadenza gets Kia’s 3.3-liter 6-cylinder that cranks out 293 horses. Married up to Kia’s 6-speed automatic, it moved the sedan through the hills quite briskly. Paddle shifters are included with every model and give you a bit more of the sports sedan feel. Jumping onto the freeway is done without laboring the engine and passing on a two-lane road when safe is done with confidence that the engine has more to give if you need it.

The ride is generally solid and confident due to a great set of suspension components, although hitting a number of potholes can be a bit jarring. Steering is light, with minimal road feel, but the Cadenza never felt hinky on curves. Braking was solid and confident.

Pricing and gas costs

One of the great things about the Cadenza is that as I said you get bang for your buck, especially when it comes to safety. Distronic cruise control, blind spot warning, lane departure control and a number of other safety systems usually found in cars costing more are in the Cadenza.

Kia starts the Cadenza at $35,100 pretty well loaded. Add technology and luxury packages and you get to $41,100-plus destination. It is without a doubt a lot of car for the money. Fuel mileage figures: 19 city, 28 highway. In my day in the Kia with combined freeway and rural driving, we averaged 22 mpg. The Cadenza uses regular unleaded gas.

An overall impressive drive

The Cadenza is an impressive effort by Kia. In eight hours or so of driving it, I came away with almost the same thought I had when I drove its cousin the Hyundai Azera: a solid effort to create a better than you would expect car. It’s one that should keep the Kia buyer that wants more, in a Kia showroom. How will it do against the Maximas, Avalons, Taurus’ and Impalas of the automotive jungle? Ah…that my friends is the $41,100 question!

Monique Griego reports all of the abusers remain at large.

A 1-year-old dog, nicknamed Nemo, was witnessed being thrown from a car at Clifton Park. He came to BARCS covered in infected bite wounds and a deep laceration on his neck. Essex Middle River Veterinary Center provided the emergency care needed for Nemo’s survival prior to him going to a rescue in South Carolina.

Queenie, a 1-2-year-old pit bull was taken from a basement after being starved to the brink of death. In shock, Queenie’s organs started shutting down from the huge open sores on her body created by being confined in a small area. She was in critical condition for a few days at Eastern Animal Hospital and is now stable. BARCS is hopeful that Queenie may be leaving the hospital and going to foster care in the next two days.

Munchkin, a 3-month-old puppy, was found already dead. He was brought to BARCS by Animal Control who was called to the 3800-block Pall Mall Road for a report of an injured puppy lying outside in the rain in the middle of the road. The puppy had seven fatal knife lacerations covering his entire body and he was eviscerated.

It was a big time showdown in Hockeytown last night as the Red Wings hosted the Blackhawks in a series tied at 1. The Red Wings grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period and never looked back, getting a 3-1 win. Detroit received a stellar performance from goalie Jimmy Howard who made 39 saves on 40 shots. The Blackhawks got a goal from super-star Patrick Kane but could not overcome a strong performance from the Wings. Game 4 of this series will take place in Hockeytown Thursday night at 8pm.

Tonight will see 4 teams continue their quest for the Stanley Cup. The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers will square off as the series shifts to downtown New York. Henrik Lundqvist will need to improve on his performances from games 1 and 2 where he was very unlike the King Henrik we’ve come to know all too well in this area. For the Bruins they just need to continue to enforce their will on the Rangers and crowd Lundqvist in the crease, he can’t stop what he doesn’t see.

Also tonight the Kings and Sharks get back on the ice at the Shark Tank in San Jose. The Sharks took game 3 in overtime after the Kings took some bad penalties and put themselves behind the eight ball. Antti Niemi finally started to look like the Vezina Trophy finalist we saw during the regular season. The Sharks look to get even, and the Kings are trying to get a stranglehold on the series tonight at 10pm.

One key factor for the Rangers is the play — and health — of goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist was back on the ice Monday after his rough game on Sunday, in which he also appeared to injure his left shoulder.

He was no worse for wear during and following the hour-long practice ahead of Tuesday’s Game 3 in New York.

“Everybody is sore,” he said. “It’s the playoffs. You can’t just sit out if it’s hurting a little bit.”

Lundqvist said he “landed on the ice awkwardly and it hurt a little bit” in the third period of Boston’s 5-2 win Saturday in Game 2.

“It’s under control,” Lundqvist said.

Before Sunday, Lundqvist hadn’t allowed five goals in 151 consecutive games, dating to a 5-2 loss at Anaheim on March 9, 2011. He also had never yielded more than three goals in any of his 31 previous games against the Bruins, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Lundqvist gave up 12 total goals in the first five games of the first-round series versus the Capitals before shutting them out in Games 6 and 7. Boston has already registered eight goals against him.

“It’s disappointing to give up five goals, but positioning-wise and reading the plays for the most part was good,” Lundqvist said. “They made some good plays, too, and then there were some unlucky bounces and screens.

“I could probably find excuses for the goals, but it’s not going to help my game. I just have to try to be better and work even harder to see pucks.”

History is hardly on the Rangers’ side. New York is 2-19 in series it trailed 0-2, and no NHL team has won consecutive series after losing the first two games.

Game 4 will also be in New York on Thursday.

“We’ve won games here,” said Rangers coach John Tortorella. “That’s what we have to do. Not win two at home, but we need to win one game at home. And that’s our total focus.”

Steve started off by asking what kind of chance would he have given Oxbow had he been an analyst. Gary said that he loved Orb and that he thought everyone was fighting for 2nd.

Bob asked about the plan for the Preakness. Gary didn’t think Oxbow would be in the lead from the start he thought that Oxbow would be 3rd or 4th, but since no one took the lead he was more than willing to.

Steve asked if there are people regretting not bringing their horses to the Preakness.  He said probably not but no matter who showed up Oxbow ran a great race and would have been tough to beat him.

Bob asked if it is bittersweet that there won’t be a triple crown this year. Gary told the guys absolutely not he is thrilled for all the people who helped and shared in the victory.

Steve wanted to know how he was able to do it at 50. Gary told him that he does work out hard and that he feels better than he did before he retired.  However, he does have a partner out there in the horse.  Gary told them that with his history of knee problems if any issues arise he will step away for a little bit.

Gary told the guys that he has no timetable for retirement and that he will continue to work with NBC as well.

Joseph Gill will be formally sworn in on Tuesday in Annapolis. Gill replaces John Griffin, who will be working as O’Malley’s chief of staff.

Gill has been serving as deputy secretary at the agency.

Before that, he was DNR’s assistant attorney general for 14 years. In that capacity, he managed a team of nine lawyers who represent the department and its employees on all legal issues.

Gill worked on developing the Rural Legacy Program, which provides money to protect large tracts of land from development, among other things. He also recently led the development of a more aggressive penalty system for natural resources violators.

After a solid start this season, Johnson is struggling.

Not coincidentally, so are the Orioles.

Johnson blew his third straight save opportunity Monday night, and Baltimore’s losing streak reached six games with a 10-inning, 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees.

New York trailed 4-3 in the ninth before Travis Hafner homered with one out on a 3-1 pitch from Johnson, who converted a franchise-record 35 successive save opportunities before his current slide. All three of those botched saves have come during Baltimore’s current skid.

“The other guys do their job and I do mine, then we’re not standing here,” Johnson said. “I think everybody’s doing a great job. I’m just not pulling my weight. And I’ll figure it out.”

Johnson wasn’t the only culprit. Starter Freddy Garcia allowed two homers and Troy Patton gave up one.

“We had trouble keeping the ball in the ballpark,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

Robinson Cano hit his team-high 13th home run in the first inning, David Adams clubbed his first major-league homer in the second and Lyle Overbay connected in the seventh.

And then there was Hafner, who got hold of a fastball that was way too high in the strike zone.

“He had one bad pitch,” Showalter said.

In the 10th, Ichiro Suzuki led off with a double off Pedro Strop (0-2) and Vernon Wells followed with an RBI double to left. Hafner’s two-out single made it 6-4.

David Robertson (3-0) worked the ninth and Mariano Rivera got three straight outs for his 17th save in 17 tries.

Johnson was 15 for 15 at one point. Now he’s 15 for 18 after blowing save attempts against San Diego, Tampa Bay and the Yankees.

“The ball’s up. That seems to be the common thing lately,” he said. “Just not making the adjustment. I’m trying, you know, doing everything. I’m going to work through it.”

After Overbay put New York up 3-2 in the seventh, Baltimore took the lead against Yankees starter CC Sabathia in the bottom half. Alexi Casilla singled and scored on a double by Nick Markakis, who came home on an opposite-field double to right by J.J. Hardy.

Showalter elevated Hardy to the third spot in the lineup because the shortstop came in with a .321 career batting average against Sabathia. Hardy also doubled in the fifth against the big left-hander.

Sabathia gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 1-3 innings. He left with New York trailing 4-3, but Hafner’s shot in the ninth preserved Sabathia’s 17-4 lifetime record against Baltimore.

Garcia, who pitched the past two years for the Yankees, allowed two runs, three hits — two homers and a meaningless single — in six innings. Aided by two double plays, the right-hander faced only three batters over the minimum.

After Cano and Adams provided the Yankees with a 2-0 lead, Chris Davis hit his 13th homer for Baltimore in the second to make it 2-1.

Garcia retired eight straight batters before Adams singled in the fifth. He was erased by a double play.

After wasting a two-out double by Matt Wieters in the fourth, Baltimore pulled even in the fifth. Steve Pearce hit a leadoff double and scored on a single by Markakis. Later in the inning, Sabathia retired Adam Jones on a grounder with runners at second and third.

Replays indicated first base umpire Eric Cooper got two calls wrong in the sixth inning, both of which went against Baltimore. Brett Gardner appeared to be picked off first base and was called safe, and Wieters seemed to beat out an infield hit but was called out.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal says 28-year-old Ryan Lawrence Spann of Joppa has been charged in the fires that were discovered Sunday at Calvert Walk Apartments.

Police say the woman left the apartment after arguing with Spann, but when she returned early Sunday, she found smoke and an alarm sounding.

Firefighters arrived to find two fires had burned themselves out inside the apartment. Damage is estimated to be at least $10,000.

Spann is charged with first- and second-degree arson and is being held at the Harford County Detention Center.

Meghan McCorkell has an update.

Nicole Gross was released from a Boston hospital this weekend. Her sister, Erika Brannock, is still there recovering. They were in town to watch their mother run the Boston Marathon but Gross and Brannock were both severely injured when an explosive went off right near the finish line. Brannock lost part of her leg. Her sister broke both legs and tore her Achilles tendon. Now, more than a month after the bombings, Gross has been released from the hospital.

“I think it’s just taking it one day at a time, one step at a time and I’ll get there quick. I’ve been fortunate to have a good recovery so far,” Gross said.

Gross, who lives with her husband in North Carolina, says her family is pulling together.

“To go through something like this has changed our relationship for the better for the rest of our lives,” Gross said.

Her sister remains hospitalized in the first phase of recovery. Brannock was a preschool teacher at Trinity Episcopal Children’s Center. Since the bombing, the entire community has come together to support her.

“She misses being home. I know that she’s being amazingly strong right now and luckily has the support of her family and friends,” said Brannock’s roommate, Erica Leonard.

Several fundraisers have been held for Brannock, including a raffle at Mothers in Federal Hill.

Family members look forward to her homecoming.

“It could be a month, two months, but we’re hoping that she’ll be here as soon as she can get to rehab,” said her cousin, Tuna Shubert.

Until then, loved ones are helping the sisters any way they can. Family members say she is in good spirits and just focused on getting better.

The shooting occurred in the 31-hundred block of Cliftmont Avenue in northeast Baltimore shortly after 8 p.m. Monday.

Officers found an adult male. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital at 8:57.

His name has not been released.

Seth agrees with Glenn that the MLB needs to improve both instant replay and umpiring.” Seth says that Instant Replay is only half the problem because the umpires need to be more accountable”.  But Glenn believes that there will not be any improvements. “The Umpires Union is too strong for the MLB to enforce the necessary changes that the game needs”

Seth believes that technology gives fan a better view than umpires. “If you have an IPAD and you are sitting in the front row of a game you have a better chance of getting a call right”.

Next up was the possibility of the league shifting the league year and moving the draft and combine back. Jason states that the NFL can do whatever they like with the draft and combine. He believes that the draft will be moved to May 15^th.  “The reality is it will probably stay there for a couple of years after that”. Jason even suggests that the NFL can move on to regional combines and make it sort of a reality show.

The site of Super Bowl L and LI (50 and 51) will be announced Tuesday. Jason acknowledged that next year’s Super Bowl will be in New York followed by Arizona. Miami and San Francisco are both the main contenders but Jason feels like Miami won’t get the super bowl. “San Francisco will get 50, it’s basically complete. Houston will get 51; it’s pretty much in the bag”.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Putty Hill Avenue and Harford Road.

Sharon Marie Bialek, 67, and her husband Robert Bialek, 71, were crossing Putty Hill Avenue in a crosswalk when they were struck by a 2004 Toyota Tacoma turning onto Putty Hill Avenue from Harford Road.

The driver, a 59-year-old man, remained at the scene.

The couple was transported to Shock Trauma, where Sharon Bialek died at approximately 2:22 a.m. Monday.

No citations have been issued.

The crash remains under investigation.

Sergeant Dennis Workley was sentenced to one year in prison, all suspended, and three years of supervised probation for his use of false information to secure a search and seizure warrant for a house.

On March 29, Judge John Addison Howard found Workley guilty of perjury and malfeasance for the incident, which took place on December 2011.

Workley was granted probation before judgment on the perjury conviction.

WBAL-TV reports the glitch is fixed and winners may now go to retailers to get their winnings. In Maryland, there were more than 180,000 people who won some prize as a result of Saturday’s Powerball drawing.

Carole Everett of the Maryland Lottery says there were 11 winners of $10,000 or more in the state and more than 300 who picked the winning numbers for prizes of $100.

One ticket purchased in Florida won the top prize of nearly $600 million.

Pat Warren reports the western Maryland resort hopes to capitalize on its location.

It is the fourth of six casinos intended to make money for the state.

It’s about keeping Maryland money in Maryland, instead of Delaware and West Virginia.

“I went to other states to play other games, mainly West Virginia,” said one gambler. “I will probably stay here now that I don’t have to travel so far.”

“I just got back from Dover the other day,” said another.

Maryland casinos are open in Perryville (Cecil County), Ocean Downs (Worcester) and Maryland Live (Anne Arundel). Baltimore City is under construction and now Rocky Gap is opening, a casino built in the existing Rocky Gap State Part Resort in western Maryland.

“We’ve tried to integrate the casino into the resort, give it a little different feel than your normal casino,” said Rocky Gap General Manager Scott Just.

With the addition of Rocky Gap, the state expects to increase its take of gambling dollars. The April numbers show Hollywood Casino pulling $8.4 million, Ocean Downs $3.9 million and Maryland Live $46.5 million. The total revenue from April was $58.9 million. Rocky Gap’s resort status makes revenue projections uncertain.

“Ocean Downs does fantastic during the summer when there are thousands of people going to the beach. They don’t do so well during the winter. We might expect some kind of similar pattern to develop here at Rocky Gap,” said Stephen Martino, Gaming Control Agency.

Plans are in the works for a sixth casino at National Harbor, which is expected to pull revenue from both Baltimore and Arundel Mills, but the state has put it on a timeline in order to balance the competition.

Marylanders in November approved table games, a sixth casino and 24-hour gambling operations to the state’s gambling law.

The Rocky Gap facility is expected to open later this week.

Alex DeMetrick reports the effort lifts hundreds of thousands of fish up and over the dam.

These fish aren’t just swimming by. They’re swimming by several stories above the Susquehanna River.

The Conowingo Dam, which generates clean hydro-electric power to thousands of homes, is also a massive roadblock to fish who migrate upstream to spawn.

So, “the fish lift was built in 1991. Been operating since then,” said Kenneth Poletti, general manager of Conowingo Dam.

It starts with a release of water from the top of the dam, creating an artificial current that lures fish into a narrow channel.

Programmed to swim into rushing water, it’s irresistible.

“The fish lift operates, it attracts all fish that are moving up the river, migrating upriver,” Poletti said.

But it’s one special fish that’s the focus: The American Shad.

Once a major food source for a young nation, dams blocking spawning grounds shrank the population.

So every spring, biologists catch what they can at Conowingo and inject them with hormones to speed up reproduction.

“Pull away a few scales, inject and that’s it,” a biologist said.

Fertilized eggs are taken to a hatchery to help re-stock the population.

But the fish lift at the dam aims for a more natural approach. All it does is provide a ride from below the dam to over the top.

This fish lift lasts only as long as the Shad are running, and it moves a lot of fish.

“Last year we moved over 1.1 million fish,” Poletti said.

Most are not American Shad.

But 23 springs adds up, and over 1.3 million American Shad have been lifted upriver.

The fish lift at Conowingo operates until the middle of June, when the American Shad migration typically ends.

Christie Ileto explains they all stayed home with the same symptoms.

There are so many children that are still recovering from the widespread illness that one parent stopped by to ask if we were reporting about the “epidemic.”

The big question is: how did all of this happen?

It’s a normal school day at the Pot Spring Elementary School in Cockeysville, but the Baltimore County School Office of Health Services says there’s nothing normal about the number of students recovering from what they’re calling a “gastrointestinal illness.”

“The principal at Pot Spring noticed that there was a high number of students absent and also that they had a higher than usual number of students vomiting at school,” said Debbie Somerville.

The health office says on Friday, about 200 students reported feeling nauseous and vomiting, along with nine faculty members. That’s about a third of the more than 600 students enrolled.

Monday, officials say about 10% of those students are still sick.

“It certainly raised some eyebrows and made us call the Health Department right away,” Somerville said.

The health department was so alarmed with the number of students reported sick, they sent a two-page questionnaire home with parents so they could fill out the symptoms their children experienced.

“They’re looking at numbers, they’re looking at trends, they’re talking to families,” Somerville said.

“What are the symptoms and when did you come down with it?” said Michael Quinn.

Quinn filled out the forms after his daughter became one of the 200 students—something he said wasn’t surprising.

“So many kids were sick on Friday, I figured probably Saturday, Sunday, Monday, we’re going to get it, too,” Quinn said.

The school’s PTA is even reminding parents on Facebook to fill out the forms, even if their child wasn’t ill. The cause in this case isn’t known but the most common cause is not washing your hands.

Some tips to prevent the spread of illness at home: wash hands often and thoroughly, use disinfectant where vomiting may have occurred and stay home at least 48 hours after symptoms stop.

The problem is illegal cell phones. State officials want to get rid of them.

Weeks after Tavon White was indicted on federal charges on running a criminal empire from behind bars, using a contraband cell phone to sell drugs and organize crimes from inside his cell at the Baltimore City Detention Center, there’s been a crackdown on cell phones aimed at stripping prison gangs of power.

State officials announce at the governor’s direction, Public Safety has begun the emergency procurement process to expand the use of the cell phone detection technology.

“I share the public revulsion at these allegations,” said Governor Martin O’Malley.

The governor started lobbying for cell phone jamming technology back in 2009, but federal laws stood in the way. State officials began testing cell phone detectors, which stop only unauthorized users.

“It doesn’t jam signals, doesn’t break federal law and it doesn’t do anything to harm legitimate communications,” said Mark Vernarelli.

Too late for some families, like Carl Lackl, killed in 2007 by a hitman accused of using an illegal prison cell phone.

“It was the ultimate weapon, along with the gun,” said Marge Shipley.

Critics say it’s taken too long to address the cell phone problems. Secretary of Public Safety Gary Maynard refused to answer media questions, denying WJZ countless interview requests.

A spokesman would not say how long until the cell phone detectors will be implemented in prisons across the state.

According to our media partner, the Baltimore Sun, a similar system in Mississippi is credited with reducing prison crimes.

During President Obama’s commencement speech at Morehouse College in Atlanta, he surprised Baltimore native Leland Shelton by telling his inspirational story.

“When Leland Shelton was four years old, Social Services took him away from his mother and put him in the care of his grandparents. By age 14, he was in the foster care system and today, he is graduating Phy Beta Kappa on his way to Harvard Law School,” Obama said.

It’s a proud moment at Baltimore City College, where Shelton was class president and graduated with honors in 2009.

“His critical thinking skills were exemplary,” said Phil Stephenson, a teacher at Baltimore City College.

Monday, Shelton’s former teachers and coach say they weren’t surprised President Obama chose to single out Shelton for his success in the face of adversity.

“He never missed practice for anything. He could keep up with schoolwork, came to practices, all our matches. He worked a lot,” said City College wrestling coach John Sarintinos.

“He never made excuses and he just did what he had to do, whatever the job was in front of him. He’s going to be great at whatever he does,” said AP English teacher Martha Armenti.

We spoke with Shelton from Atlanta. He said after Harvard Law, he’s coming back to Baltimore to be an advocate for foster children.

“I see Baltimore as a city with a great future because if a kid like me can do what I’ve done and plan to do, I know plenty of other kids in Baltimore can do the same thing,” he said.

City College says giving back to Baltimore is instilled in their curriculum. So many of their graduates have become great leaders here, so big things are expected from Leland Shelton.

Shelton also made the front page of Monday’s New York Times. He’s expected to be back in Baltimore soon.
