Huguely could have received up to 60 years in prison. Now he could be locked up until he’s 50 years old.

Wednesday night, the prosecutor said there are no winners in this case, just losers.

George Huguely, convicted of second degree murder and grand larceny, dodged the worst possible punishment but he could still serve up to 26 years in prison.

After nine hours, jurors ruled the Chevy Chase native, who played lacrosse at the University of Virginia, beat his girlfriend, Cockeysville native Yeardley Love to death in her off-campus apartment in May, 2010. He was upset after learning she slept with another lacrosse player and drunk after a day of golfing with teammates and his father.

“There are no winners in this case. There’s nothing but loss everywhere. Our hearts go out to the Love family. They’ve suffered enormously,” said the prosecutor.

In court, Huguely showed no emotions during the verdict but he started to weep after jurors left the courthouse to begin the sentencing phase.

Love’s mother and sister offered heartbreaking testimony about lonely holidays. Her mother, Sharon, told the jury, “Every year that goes by, I fear that I’m forgetting little pieces about Yeardley. That worries me.” In a statement, they thanked the prosecutors and asked for privacy.

No one spoke on behalf of Huguely. In fact, his father didn’t show up in court for their verdict. Instead, Huguely’s lawyers pleaded to the jury to spare their client a long prison sentence, arguing Huguely was immature and remorseful.

“He displayed amazing resilience and courage,” said the defense attorney. “We look forward to some corrections in what happened here tonight.”

The defense attorney didn’t use the word “appeal.”

The jury’s sentence is just a recommendation. The judge can reduce the sentence but he can’t increase it. Formal sentencing is scheduled for April 16.

In a statement, Notre Dame Prep School (where Love went to high school) said, “Throughout this ordeal, the notre Dame Prepatory School community has prayed for all of those touched by this tragedy. While the trial has concluded, our prayers will continue.

“Yeardley has been in our hearts and minds since her passing in 2010. She will be remembered and celebrated in many ways at NDP—through a scholarship that bears her name, with a three-sport turf field and through the empathy our community holds for her and her family. Yeardley will always be one of `our girls’ and though we will never fill the void left by her death, we pray that those whose lives have been immeasurably altered may find peace.”

Two Baltimore firms are involved in the lawsuit, which claims Facebook is keeping tabs on its users 24/7.

“You would hope that all they would track is stuff that was on the site,” said one user.

But a new class action lawsuit says that isn’t the case.

“We’re sick and tired of big companies abusing the privacy of consumers,” said lawyer Billy Murphy.

Murphy claims Facebook is violating its own policy by monitoring the internet sites you visit after you log off.

“Your information about your personal, private behavior should not be available to prying eyes who want it so that they can make money off of you,” said Murphy.

Facebook’s policy says it receives data from the computer, mobile phone or other device you use to access Facebook. This may include your IP address, location, type of browser you use or the pages you visit.

According to the suit, when you sign up for Facebook, the site installs digital trackers called “cookies.” Those cookies can monitor what websites you’re looking at.

“Cookies are basically a GPS system,” said web expert Gary Buclous.

Buclous says having your web history tracked can be dangerous.

“Very, very nervous. Because, let’s face it, some information we want to disclose and some information we do not want disclosed,” Buclous said.

Facebook claims to fight the case in court, claiming it has no merit.

The suit filed by the Baltimore attorneys is one of a dozen lawsuits filed against Facebook in 11 states.

One hundred and sixty seven miles separates the University of Virginia from Cockeysville, where 22-year-old Yeardley Love lived. News that her former boyfriend, 24-year-old George Huguely, was convicted of killing her in a drunken jealous rage spread quickly to Maryland.

“I think that is the right call. He definitely deserves to be penalized for his actions,” said college student Reed Brown.

During the trial, witness testimony revealed friends say Love was abused by Huguely, a volatile relationship often fueled by alcohol. Both were seniors and lacrosse stars.

Residents in Montgomery County where Huguely lived also reacted.

“Obviously, it was a crime of passion. I think justice was served and a sentence will be forthcoming,” said a resident.

The case of Yeardley Love’s murder has drawn a great deal of attention, both inside and outside of Maryland.

Eyewitness News found a group of lacrosse players from Bates College in Maine visiting Maryland. They’ve watched news coverage of Yeardley Love’s murder and George Huguely’s trial.

“I don’t think there is ever justice because she’s still gone,” said Lucas Denning.

“I think it’s deserved. I think the evidence is obvious and I’m surprised it took a year and a half to get there,” said Wylie Leabo.

George Huguely will be formally sentenced April 16.

Five medics were dispatched to Cold Spring Lane and Hillen Road for a multi-vehicle accident.

Units treated and transported four patients to Hopkins, one to Bayview, two to Union Memorial with non-life threatening injuries.

Their conditions are not known.

The accident is under investigation.

Thirty-nine-year-old Albert G. Antonelli of Queenstown was arrested Tuesday when he showed up for a court hearing. The Annapolis Capital reports that he was ordered held without bond on a September charge of possessing heroin and drug paraphernalia while on supervised probation.

Antonelli served three years in prison after killing 29-year-old Officer Duke Aaron III when his pickup truck, traveling more than 70 mph, hit the back of Aaron’s unmarked cruiser on Route 50 west of the Bay Bridge.

Troopers say the fatal accidents happened on Saturday in Prince George’s County and Monday in Harford and Caroline counties. One pedestrian was killed by a hit-and-run driver; all three incidents occurred after dark.

State Police Superintendent Col. Marcus Brown says more than 100 pedestrians are killed each year in Maryland. He urged pedestrians to make sure they are visible after dark by wearing retro-reflective material and to cross only in marked intersections and crosswalks.

Christopher Bolton of Silver Spring has been charged with manufacturing or possession of a destructive device. He was arrested on Wednesday and is being held on $750,000.

Deputies say in September, Bolton threatened to kill a person he had a disagreement with and began building a device out of screws, batteries, .40 caliber ammunition rounds and an unknown liquid in a plastic bottle.

On Feb. 7, the device was found in a shed and removed safely by the Fire Marshal’s bomb squad. On that date, a warrant was issued for Bolton’s arrest.

Circuit Judge Edward Dwyer issued his opinion Wednesday in a case involving the Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline.

He affirmed a local zoning board’s denial of Potomac Edison’s plan to build an electrical substation on 150 acres near Mount Airy.

The company argued that the substation is needed for a proposed, 275-mile transmission line across parts of West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.

Work on the project was suspended last year because the economic slowdown decreased demand for electricity

Potomac Edison is a unit of Allegheny Energy, owned by FirstEnergy Corp, of Akron, Ohio. The PATH project is a joint venture between Allegheny and American Electric Power Co. of Columbus, Ohio.

Twenty-two-year-old Jacob White-Brosenne of Littlestown, Pa., was arrested Tuesday night by the Penn Township Police Department on unrelated charges. White-Brosenne is awaiting extradition to Maryland.

Maryland authorities have warrants for White-Brosenne charging him with the Feb. 18 armed robbery and assault of a man outside an Eldersburg restaurant in Sykesville and the Feb. 20 armed robbery of a convenience store in Westminster.

This sentencing hearing is very much like a trial of its own. And right before jurors got the case, prosecutors pushed for the ultimate punishment. And the defense begged for mercy.

A jury is deciding whether Lee Stephens should live or die. Earlier this month, the 32-year-old was convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of Cpl. David McGuinn, an officer who worked at the now-closed Maryland House of Correction in Jessup.

The 2006 slaying happened inside the prison, leaving blood splattered on Stephens’ clothing, shoes and cell bars.

That very evidence makes him eligible to receive the death penalty.

In 2009, the state legislature enforced more stringent requirements to seek capital punishment– biological or DNA evidence, a video recording of the crime or a videotaped confession is necessary.

This case is the first test ever of its DNA link

In closing arguments during sentencing, prosecutor Sandra Howell told jurors: “Stephens brutally murdered, stabbing, ending the life of David McGuinn. This is the ultimate crime. For that crime, the law provides the ultimate penalty.”

But the jury will also consider mitigating factors. Stephens attorney pointed to a troubled childhood, filled with violence drugs and sexual abuse. Defense Attorney Michael Lawler said: “He was taught insanity, hate and cruelty from the moment he was old enough to learn.”

He then asked: “Have you ever heard of a tortured existence?”

This jury took about a week to return with a guilty verdict. Now that they’re facing a matter of life or death, it’s anyone’s guess when they’ll decide on a sentence.

If Stephens is sentenced to death, it will automatically go to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.

That not only increases water bills, but also increases your bill for heating the water.

The future takes on the fossils and sets out to inherit the wind. Wind energy is an O’Malley administration priority for the second year in a row but this time the lawmakers have had more time to study it and in a Senate committee hearing last week, the governor pitched it again.

“There’s no hope that we’ll ever get it if we don’t continue to move forward,” said O’Malley.

It uses the wind off the coast of Ocean City to generate electricity.

“God has put it off of our shore. What we have to make the choice to do is to harness it,” said O’Malley.

And customers have to be prepared to pay for it, an additional $2 a month, which gives some lawmakers pause.

“A lot of that depends on what we think the price of fossil fuels is going to be,” said O’Malley.

But wind advocates believe despite the cost, the juice is worth the squeeze.

According to the administration, it would be five years before consumers would see the cost of building the wind farm added to their bills.

Right across the street from Baltimore’s central booking was a rally to block a controversial jail-based deportment program.

“We are going backwards instead of forwards in our country if this is the way it’s going to be,” said Lisa O’Reilly.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also called ICE, launched its Secure Communities program this week. It requires local police officers and prison guards to share all fingerprints of arrestees with the FBI. The FBI then gives that information over to ICE, which uses the prints to track and later deport undocumented immigrants. Baltimore’s central booking is where the process starts because everyone who’s arrested stops there first.

“It opens the door for racial profiling and civil rights abuses. People are charged with very minor crimes,” said Elizabeth Alex, Casa de Maryland.

Members of Casa de Maryland, a civil rights group for Hispanics, says it makes their community anything but secure because the fear of deportation will overshadow the need to build strong relationships with police.

“This is Baltimore City. The people, they’re going to be afraid, `I will get arrested,’” said Esteban Guevara, a legal immigrant.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake joined the ranks of city leaders nationwide who are speaking out against Secure Communities. In a written statement, she said, “We recognize that the city of Baltimore plays no role in the implementation of the program and that I have no control over ICE’s actions. However, I am extremely disheartened by this recent decision to implement the program in Baltimore and the manner in which it is being carried out.”

The “Secure Communities” program is in 1,500 cities and counties nationwide.

He’s not the only politician eyeing the cash for purposes that have nothing to do with foreclosure. Like a pot of gold in a barren field, the $25 billion deal offers a tempting and timely source of funding for state governments with multimillion-dollar budget gaps.

Although most of the money goes directly to homeowners affected by the mortgage crisis, the settlement announced this month by attorneys general in 49 states includes nearly $2.7 billion for state governments to spend as they wish.

Some are pledging to use it as relief for struggling homeowners or to help related initiatives such as a Michigan plan to assist children left homeless by foreclosures. But several states are already planning to divert at least some of the money to prop up their budgets, and more will be wrestling with those decisions in the coming weeks.

For some consumer advocates, the diversion is reminiscent of the 1998 tobacco settlement in which states spent billions on projects that had nothing to do with curbing smoking.

“We shouldn’t be in the position of taking money that is intended to help consumers and their mortgage tribulations and putting that to another purpose,” said Joan Bray, a former Democratic Missouri senator who now is chairwoman of the Consumers Council of Missouri.

States that use the onetime payout for immediate expenses may also face the question of what to do next year when the money is used up. But officials in struggling states say they must deal with the most immediate problems first.

A federal judge in Washington could approve the final settlement by the end of February. Once that happens, money could begin flowing to states within a couple of weeks, arriving just as lawmakers are crafting budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

Republican legislative leaders in Missouri have already embraced the Democratic governor’s plan to use nearly all of the state’s $41 million settlement payment to help shore up the budget. The mortgage money allowed Nixon to reduce his proposed funding cut for public colleges and universities from 12.5 percent to 7.8 percent — potentially easing student tuition increases.

The money was “as we looked at it, relatively unfettered,” Nixon said. “Clearly the economy was affected all across the country by foreclosure challenges, and I think it is apt and appropriate to use those dollars to help restore some of the challenging cuts that I was forced to make.”

In Pennsylvania, where a fourth straight budget deficit is projected, Democrats are pressing the Republican-run attorney general’s office to use some of its $69 million payment to offset $2 billion in cuts to programs that benefit education, the elderly, disabled or poor.

“The governor’s budget has so many cuts to so many valuable programs, if the attorney general’s office has $69 million, why not use that to offset these cuts to essential programs?” said state Rep. Joe Markosek, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.

Vermont plans to use $2.4 million from the settlement to help balance its budget. Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler said about 10 percent of his state’s $62.5 million payment will be made available for the governor and lawmakers to spend as they choose.

In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker wants to use $26 million to plug a state budget hole because the foreclosure crisis had a “direct impact on the economy.” But the Republican governor’s plan has ruffled some Democrats, including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

St. Louis homebuilder Bob Suelmann, who has a background in real estate and finance, said it’s “ridiculous” for states to divert mortgage settlement payments to other purposes.

“It’s like taking tax money that was supposed to go to road improvements, and then suddenly the bridges are falling down and you don’t know what to do about it,” Suelmann said. “That money should go to something that can directly improve the situation with the housing program.”

When the tobacco settlement was reached, states initially promised to beef up public health with the $206 billion paid out over several decades. Instead, much of the money went to general government operations. State funding for tobacco-prevention programs has now fallen to its lowest level since 1999, according
to recent estimates.

“The lesson is advocates have to be vigilant,” said Marie Cocco, a spokeswoman for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Most states will probably use the money for mortgage-assistance hotlines, mediation between borrowers and lenders, legal aid and financial counseling, said Geoff Greenwood, a spokesman for Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, who was the lead negotiator on the settlement.

But, he added, officials “have to acknowledge that there has been damage done to states and their budgets and their services because of this mortgage crisis. So states will have some flexibility in how they spend” the money.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said she will oppose any efforts to use the money to prop up the state’s shaky budget.

California, which was one of the hardest hit states by the mortgage crisis, will receive the largest payment — about $430 million at a time when the state is facing a $9.2 billion deficit. A spokesman for Gov. Jerry Brown said no decision has been made on how to spend the money.

Some consumer advocates say they will be watching closely to see where the payments are spent.

“As insufficient as it is,” said Kathleen Day, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit Center for Responsible Lending, “this money was intended to go directly to help struggling homeowners.”

There is a front passing north of us tonight. It could produce some showers on the way through. That front leaves tomorrow, but there will still be some clouds around and possibly a shower or two. Then, a much stronger front comes our way Friday.

There could be some rain and maybe even a thunderstorm with Friday’s front. The front will pass through early in the day, then the winds will really pick up when it passes. Gusty northwest winds will bring in much cooler air for the weekend. And since the lakes have not really frozen over this year, this weather pattern will create a late season lake-effect snow event. Expect some snow in western Maryland, and we wouldn’t be surprised if a few flurries made it all the way down to Carroll or Baltimore County. Expect highs to stay in the 40s Saturday and Sunday, while overnight lows will drop back in the 20s.

Another storm will move our way Monday or Tuesday, but it will also bring a new round of warm air with it. Temperatures will climb back above the average of 47/48 degrees again.

When Tom Brady learned his childhood mentor Tom Martinez needed a lifesaving kidney transplant, the quarterback used his Super Bowl platform to make a public plea to find his friend a match.

“It’s reached a crisis point in terms of there not being enough donors available,” Brady said.

That urgent need became even more evident Tuesday when 67-year-old Martinez died. He was in the transplant program at Johns Hopkins. He would occasionally travel to the hospital to visit with doctors but he died after suffering a heart attack during dialysis treatment.

“We’re always sad when you hear someone has passed away waiting and it happens, unfortunately, every day,” said Jennifer Gelman.

Gelman is from the Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland, which works to match donors with those in need. She says Brady’s personal story of loss is bringing attention to the shortage of donors.

“It brings home the point that the need is real,” Gelman said.

In Maryland, there are currently 2,000 people waiting for organ transplants. Nationwide, that number jumps to 113,000. On average, 19 people a day die waiting.

Although Martinez died before receiving his transplant, Gelman says his story will help save others.

“It brings back that need for people to take the time for donor designation and making their wishes known,” she said.

Brady’s plea for donors did get more people to donate. We’re told several hundred people signed up after hearing about his mentor.

Brady and Martinez met 20 years ago. The quarterback credits him with teaching him how to throw a football.

The state’s historically black colleges and universities say yes. They say that they’re underfunded by more than $2 billion.

A landmark $2.1 billion lawsuit pits Maryland’s historically black colleges and universities, like Morgan State, against the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

“At the core of this is simply racism. The failure of the leadership to value the African-American citizenry in Maryland,” said Dr. Maurice Taylor, VP, Morgan State University.  

The lawsuit says over a decade Maryland has shortchanged its HBCUs $2.19 billion in revenue that would have gone to thing like campus infrastructure, teacher salaries, technology upgrades and student aid.

Maryland has four HBCUs: Morgan State University, Bowie State University, Coppin State University and The University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.

Students from these universities say they can see the underfunding first-hand.

“Can you imagine the possibilities, can you imagine all the great accomplishments we could have had if we had these smart classrooms, if we had all the Mac laptops that Towson has, when our students can barely get laptops here,” said Rashad Staton, junior, Morgan State University.

“We’ve been promised resources and money and funding for the last 15 to 25 years,” said Daquan Lawrence, senior, Morgan State University.

The six-week trial ended last week, and now the students at Morgan State University and at Maryland’s other HBCUs are waiting for the judge to make a decision.

If the lawsuit goes their way, the students say there’s a lot of catching up to do.

“You look around and it looks like it’s growing and it looks like there is growth. It’s years of fighting but we are still years behind,” said Alvin Hill, junior, Morgan State University.

A final ruling from U.S. District Judge Catherine Black is expected sometime this summer.

Two gunmen shot a customer in the chest, then stole cigarettes and cash.

Police swarmed to the 52-hundred block of Harford Road after an armed robbery and shooting inside the Royal Farms store just after 9:30 Tuesday night. Inside, officers found a 46-year-old customer shot in the chest.

“When he was taken away by the medics, he was conscious and breathing,” said Detective Donny Moses.

Police say they are looking for two suspects. One of them carried a silver handgun. The men stole cigarettes and cash but police have yet to say what led them to shoot a customer.

There were others in the store at the time.

“There was one witness who actually helped the victim in this case. It was a traumatic incident; she kept her cool. She talked to the victim until the medic got here. She did a great job,” Moses said.

Luckily, that customer survived his gunshot wound and is expected to make a full recovery.

Customers were shocked by the news as police ask for the public’s help identifying the two robbers.

“There’s always people here but you would think that kind of thing wouldn’t happen. The parking lot’s always full,” said Linda Brunner.

“That’s so sad. That’s so sad. I guess we need more police around here,” said Michelle Haywood.

Officials with Royal Farms refused to talk with WJZ about the robbery and would only say they are cooperating with police. The suspects were last seen running away into the neighborhood behind the store.

Alex DeMetrick reports, although it doesn’t really change anything, it’s what the law symbolizes that has people talking.

Frederick County’s new law takes effect Wednesday.

“Declaring English the official language. I don’t see what the big deal is,” Frederick County Commission Chairman Blaine Young said.

But the only county commissioner to vote against it does see something.

“The chairman wanted to scare illegal immigrants from coming here,” Frederick County Commissioner David Gray said.

“We do not look at illegal aliens, illegal immigrants as the rest of the state does, in terms of some of our major metropolitan areas,” Young said.

But Young says the language law is not about scaring away all non-English speaking people.

“Frederick County has been very attractive to our hard-working, law-abiding immigrants. We welcome them,” he said.

“We’re not like, people would say, xenophobic. We’re just not built that way, and this sends a message as if we are, and I don’t want to be asscoiated with that,” Gray said.

The county ordinance does not trump state or federal law, meaning those documents or proceedings may be in more than just English.

“I don’t see how it’s really going to make any difference,” a Frederick County resident said.

“We’re all Americans, I think it should be English.”

The English ordinance is generating plenty of talk.

“English is a beautiful language for the American people, but it’s very good to be integrated. Different diversities of people and different languages,” Ernest Thomas, Jr., a Frederick County resident, said.

“I like it when I can converse with people in the language I know, and yet this country was built on immigrants,” another Frederick County resident, Fanny Johnson, said.

The English ordinance would not stop county agencies from using a foreign language in education, public health and emergency services.

Shark fins are popular in Asia where they are a delicacy used in soup. However, environmentalists say overfishing is threatening shark species.

House lawmakers in Annapolis heard testimony Wednesday on a bill containing fines of up to $50,000 for repeat offenders. If the bill becomes law Maryland would join California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and Guam that have banned shark fin sales. The environmental group Oceana says Maryland’s bill is similar to legislation also pending in New York and Illinois.

The European Union’s executive arm said in November that it wants to completely ban shark finning — the practice of removing sharks’ fins and throwing the finless creatures back into the sea to die.

“It left me speechless, which I think is a bit ironic for this position,” Wagner said.

A part-time job with a major league commitment. Wagner will voice all 81 home games at Camden Yards.

Six hundred and seventy applicants submitted a demo reel. The Orioles narrowed it down to 25, then to 8, and finally, to just 1.

“It was unbelievably difficult and stressful,” Wagner said. “Don’t mess up, don’t stumble over your words. I’m going to have a lot of family and friends here and that’s going to be great– knowing they will be listening to me.”

Wagner replaces Dave McGowan who won an audition 14 years ago.

“It’s something I’ll tell my kids and grandkids about, hopefully. And I can’t wait. It’s going to be great.”

Wagner has the best seat in the house for every home game here at Camden Yards. He can’t wait for his first day on April 6.

Walker also has a great singing voice. He was recently on tour with the Wizard of Oz and says if they ever need someone to sing the Star Spangled Banner, he’s their man.

Officers called to a Pikesville apartment around 5 a.m. Wednesday heard a loud argument inside and found the 15-year-old boy with a stab wound to his upper leg.

Police say the mother and teen were arguing and she stabbed him in the leg. The mother has been charged with assault, child abuse and resisting arrest. She’s being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center on $150,000 bail.

The teen was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

But the cathedral said Wednesday it must still raise $18 million to complete repairs and stabilization of its hand-carved stonework. The announcement comes six months after the 5.8-magnitude earthquake in August damaged four main spires on the cathedral’s central tower and cracked other parts of the building.

The estimated cost of repairing the building has risen from $15 million to $20 million.

Officials say they have raised another $5 million since the earthquake to support the cathedral’s operating budget, which has suffered in recent years.

Circuit Judge Edward Dwyer issued his opinion Wednesday in a case involving the Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline.

He affirmed a local zoning board’s denial of Potomac Edison’s plan to build an electrical substation on 150 acres near Mount Airy.

The company argued that the substation is needed for a proposed, 275-mile transmission line across parts of West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.

Work on the project was suspended last year because the economic slowdown decreased demand for electricity.

Potomac Edison is a unit of Allegheny Energy, owned by FirstEnergy Corp, of Akron, Ohio. The PATH project is a joint venture between Allegheny and American Electric Power Co. of Columbus, Ohio.
