Kai Jackson has more on the fallout that fueled the change.

The Komen Foundation got an earful over its initial decision to pull Planned Parenthood funding. And the outcry indicates, it heard that earful loud and clear.

There was no running from the controversy created by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, when the organization yanked funding this week from Planned Parenthood.

“I think we’ve seen this week a disgraceful display of Planned Parenthood using real thug tactics to try to bring political pressure on the Komen foundation,” Charmaine Yoest, of Americans United For Life, said.

Yet, public outrage forced Komen to reverse its decision and reinstate funding on Friday.

“It’s really critical funding and it would have been very devastating to, I mean, not just Planned Parenthood but the women that we serve,” Christielyn Dyller of Planned Parenthood of Maryland.

Komen issued a statement saying, “We want to apologize to the American public for decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives.”

“I look at these groups like sister groups, you know,” said Vera Newton, a breast cancer survivor in Randallstown.

Komen broke that bond citing a federal investigation into accusations that Planned Parenthood used federal dollars for abortions– a charge Planned Parenthood denies.

“Planned Parenthood uses the overwhelming majority of its money– nationwide, I think it’s 97 percent– to deal with treatment,” Sen. Ben Cardin (D), said.

Komen raises the most money of any breast cancer organization in the country. And Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of reproductive health services in America, with most clients at or below the poverty level.

Newton supports both.

“It’s what we believe Susan Komen is all about. It’s why we walk 60 miles,” she said.

Planned Parenthood said it received $3 million in three days during this controversy. But critics of Planned Parenthood say that is just further proof that it doesn’t need the $700,000 a year that the Komen Foundation provides.

Planned Parenthood of Maryland says the organization also provides free breast exams to its clients.

The charges against Corporal Rick Alexander stem from a search and seizure warrant that Anne Arundel County Police executed at 10 p.m. on Thursday in the 1300 block of Juniper Street in Shadyside.

Five suspects detained from that location told police during their interviews with detectives that Cpl. Alexander had informed them of the police raid before it happened. Further investigations revealed phone records and conversations between Cpl. Alexander and one of the suspects.

The suspects also said that because they were tipped off by Alexander about the raid, they were able to move the drugs from the Juniper Street residence to another location, where detectives later found $829 worth of marijuana.

The 36-year-old Alexander is a 14-year veteran with the Anne Arundel County Police Department. He appeared before the District Court Commissioner but was released on his personal recognizance.

Meghan McCorkell has the growing investigation by prison officials.

The family of 18-year-old Kevin Thomas say the man who killed their son has been posting on Facebook from prison, even talking about his case with one of the star witnesses.

The profile picture on Charles Johnson’s Facebook page shows him behind bars.

Johnson stole a car and slammed into a vehicle killing three teenagers, including 18-year old Kevin Thomas.

“How could he be doing that? If our kids got killed, how can he have a life in jail, have a phone and be on Facebook?” asked Helen Dunnigan, Kevin Thomas’ mother.

The Facebook page says the postings are coming from a mobile phone.

At one point– talking about his case– Johnson writes, ‘Take a dime and the charges disappear’. They say he’s even had interaction with a witness in his trial.

“So what good is a witness if he’s associating with a person that he’s supposed to be testifying against?” Nelson Thomas, Kevin Thomas’s father, said.

Corrections officials tell WJZ, “While it cannot be ascertained at this point that these allegations are accurate, Baltimore City Division of Corrections staff is putting it’s full resources into this investigation.”

They say if the accusations are true, Johnson will be prosecuted.

Prison officials have cracked down on cell phones behind bars.

Just last year, the Division of Corrections seized more than 1,300 contraband cell phones from the prison system, including 456 from the Baltimore Detention Center.

For the Thomas family, the Facebook page is a painful reminder of their loss.

“We have no more life because he took our son. Where’s justice for our son if he has justice to be on Facebook in prison?”

Jail officials say they have not found a cell phone on Johnson. Without the phone, they have no way of telling whether it was actually him posting from prison.

This week, Johnson was found not guilty on three counts of manslaughter. He was convicted on lesser charges.

The Broncs’ 46 points were the fewest the Greyhounds have allowed since defeating Niagara 68-45 on Feb. 21, 1992.

Loyola (17-5, 10-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), which has won five straight games and eight of its last nine, also snapped Rider’s three-game winning streak.

The Broncs (9-15, 6-6), who averaged 87.3 points in their previous three games, posted their lowest point total since losing 65-40 to Fairfield in the 2003-04 season.

Leading 6-5, the Greyhounds went on a 29-4 run. Loyola held Rider to 3 of 23 first-half field goals while forcing 12 turnovers to lead 39-12 at the break.

Dylon Cormier added 12 points for Loyola and Shane Walker had 12 rebounds.

Daniel Stewart led Rider with 13 points and 10 boards.

Military District of Washington commander Maj. Gen. Michael Linnington on Friday referred all charges against Pfc. Bradley Manning to a general court-martial, the Army said in a statement.

The referral means Manning will stand trial for allegedly giving more than 700,000 secret U.S. documents and classified combat video to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks for publication.

The 24-year-old Crescent, Okla., native faces 22 counts, including aiding the enemy. Manning could be imprisoned for life if convicted of that charge.

A judge yet to be appointed will set the trial date.

Defense lawyers say Manning was clearly a troubled young soldier whom the Army should never have deployed to Iraq or given access to classified material while he was stationed there from late 2009 to mid-2010.

At a preliminary hearing in December, military prosecutors produced evidence that Manning downloaded and electronically transferred to WikiLeaks nearly half a million sensitive battlefield reports from Iraq and Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables, and video of a deadly 2007 Army helicopter attack that WikiLeaks shared with the world and dubbed “Collateral Murder.”

Manning’s lawyers countered that others had access to Manning’s workplace computers. They say he was in emotional turmoil, partly because he was a gay soldier at a time when homosexuals were barred from serving openly in the U.S. armed forces. The defense also claims Manning’s apparent disregard for security rules during stateside training and his increasingly violent outbursts after deployment were red flags that should have prevented him from having access to classified material. Manning’s lawyers also
contend that the material WikiLeaks published did little or no harm to national security.

In the December hearing at Fort Meade, Md., prosecutors also presented excerpts of online chats found on Manning’s personal computer that allegedly document collaboration between him and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Federal prosecutors in northern Virginia are investigating Assange and others for allegedly facilitating the disclosures.

Fifty-three-year-old Ralph Edward Thomas Jr. of Reisterstown was also ordered to pay more than $800,000 in restitution, forfeit his home and luxury cars at sentencing on Friday.

According to his plea agreement, Thomas stole from a trust established for the child and used the money to buy his Reisterstown home. He also stole from an elderly woman’s account and used the money to pay his credit card bills.

Even presidential candidate Ron Paul has joined the cause of consumers looking to buy unprocessed “real foods” straight from the farm, saying government shouldn’t deny them that choice.

An outbreak of campylobacter illness is a reminder of the potential hazards, however. Raw milk from a dairy in Pennsylvania is now linked to 38 cases in four states, and the farm has temporarily suspended sales. Campylobacter can cause diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever and can be life-threatening if it spreads to the bloodstream.

Consumers who want unpasteurized milk have to work to find it. It’s against federal law to transport it across state lines, and most states don’t allow it to be sold in stores off the farm. Twenty states prohibit raw milk sales altogether.

The government says the milk is unsafe because of the pathogens cows may encounter on the farm. A wide variety of pathogens besides campylobacter, can be found in raw milk — including salmonella, listeria, E. coli and others — and those sickened could suffer from stroke, kidney failure, paralysis or death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency points out that raw milk killed many people — especially young children — before the onset of pasteurization, which kills disease-causing germs by heating milk to high temperatures for a specific period of time.

The CDC says pasteurized milk is rich in proteins, carbohydrates and other nutrients, and that heat only slightly decreases thiamine, vitamin B12, and vitamin C.

While the government contends that milk is a minor source of those nutrients, raw milk advocates say that’s proof that pasteurization makes milk less wholesome and pure.

The government doesn’t keep records of raw milk consumption or sales, but it’s clear that the product is popularized by a larger food movement that encourages less processing and more “real food.” Raw milk goes a step further than organic milk free of growth hormones. Organic milk, too, has enjoyed a sales boost in
recent years.

“We are pushing for consumer choice and freedom and a variety of dairy options for people,” said Kimberly Hartke of the Weston A. Price Foundation, an activist group that advocates “restoring nutrient-dense foods to the human diet.” Price was a dentist who studied global nutrition around the turn of the 20th century.

Advocates say far more illnesses are caused each year by leafy greens, deli meats and other products produced in much larger quantities than raw milk.

“To outlaw or ban any natural food because it could possibly make you sick is an extreme position, because there is no safe food,” Hartke said.

That’s a position that presidential contender Paul, a physician, understands. He appears to have acknowledged the potential risks of raw milk when he said last summer that “what I’m doing in politics
is not exactly the medical opinion.”

Still, he said, “as long as you don’t force other people, and as long as you don’t defraud people, you ought to have a choice.”

Supporters of raw milk are passionate, and the issue has become one of the most animated food debates. Raw milk consumers and Price foundation representatives have held protests in Washington to fight Food and Drug Administration crackdowns on some farms that sell raw milk.

The fact that there’s even a debate infuriates many in the public health community.

“The intensity with which raw milk supporters believe in this product is almost unheard of, certainly for a food,” said Sarah Klein, an attorney for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “It’s like snake oil.”

Klein says advocates often mislead consumers by describing bucolic settings and happy cows.

“These are still animals; they defecate inches from where the milk is produced,” she said. “They stand in it, they swat their tails through it. That’s all very natural. It’s just a matter of course that raw milk is contaminated.”

The owner of the Pennsylvania dairy, Your Family Cow farm in Chambersburg, posted a message on the farm’s website last week saying that several customers had called them to say they had been experiencing “acute diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.”

Owner Edwin Shank said in the posting that the farm’s testing had shown samples to be negative for campylobacter and speculated that the illnesses may be from another cause. But the Pennsylvania health department has linked the outbreak to the farm, and a spokeswoman for the Maryland’s health department says an unopened bottle from the farm tested positive for campylobacter.

Raw milk sales are illegal in Maryland, but the state has four illnesses from the outbreak. Those sickened presumably drove to Pennsylvania and brought the milk back for their own consumption, said Maria Said of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

One person is also sick in New Jersey and two in West Virginia, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Thirty one people are sick in Pennsylvania, many of them in Franklin County, where the farm is located.

Pennsylvania has had at least seven disease outbreaks linked to raw milk consumption since 2006, involving almost 200 people, according to the health department. Pennsylvania is one of 17 states where some type of raw milk sales are allowed, according to the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.

Mike Perry reported there were a couple of small explosions coming from the car, and the gas tank was also heavily involved.

Authorities said the car was a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette and that it was the only vehicle involved in the incident. There are no reports of injuries due to the fire and all lanes of the highway were reopened after 6:45 p.m.

Officials have not revealed what caused the fire.

The council voted 4-1 on Tuesday for the 10-year loan, which has a 4 percent interest rate the first seven years.

Officials plan to distribute the containers in April and collect the old ones.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that most residents will have a single collection day each week, and no longer will be required to separate recyclables.

Mike Hellgren explains how police used surveillance video to make the arrests.

All four of the men charged with murdering a teenager at Towson Town Center will stay behind bars. A judge denied their bail.

And in court, WJZ learned more about the surveillance video that police credit with solving the case.

It’s part of an extensive network of 200 cameras at the mall– upgraded after the murder of a teacher here during a botched robbery in 2005.

But prosecutors said the video they recovered in this case does not show the actual shooting. It does show the shooter, Tyrone Brown, walking through the mall wearing a mask.

And WJZ also learned Jermell Brandon– the man who police say first spotted the victim and tracked him through the mall– was interviewed twice by detectives before they arrested him.

“I wouldn’t say he’s cooperative, but he’s come in when he’s been asked to come in by homicide and the state,” William Purpura, Brandon’s defense attorney, said.

“The entire family is shocked that he’s been arrested on this, and we’ll just see what the evidence shows as time goes on,” Purpura said.

Rodney Pridget, Jr.’s father says he’s heartbroken but relieved.

“Good. They need to be in jail. You can’t go around here killing people, you know what I mean? Thinking you can get away with it,” Rodney Pridget, Sr. said. “Love that boy. Plus, he was my only son. I love him, and I miss him. I see his face every night.”

The accused shooter told the judge: “I was hoping I could get bail so I could seek appropriate representation.”

He slouched in a jail-issued jumpsuit, appearing on closed-circuit television. Police have not commented on the motive.

“The analogy of a football game. We’re just at the initial kickoff,” Purpura said. “We’ve got a long way to go, and we’ll see what happens as it unravels.”

Tyrone, Brown, the accused shooter, could face the death penalty.

All of the men charged have prior criminal records.

She is being treated for serious injuries at Shock Trauma. The incident happened around 7:15 p.m. Friday.

The Baltimore City Police Department’s crash team is investigating.

Turgeon was an assistant to Williams at Kansas for four seasons, from 1988-92. Now in charge of rebuilding the program at Maryland, Turgeon will go up against Williams for the first time Saturday
when the Terrapins (13-8, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) host No. 5 North Carolina (19-3, 6-1).

Turgeon isn’t looking forward to it.

“You don’t ever want to play against friends. It’s no fun,” Turgeon said Friday. “But once the game starts, you don’t even think about his coaching the other team. You just coach it.”

Turgeon has plenty of other things to think about beyond that student-teacher thing. For one thing, the Tar Heels are tied for first place in the conference and have won four straight and 13 of 14. Then there’s standout forward Harrison Barnes, who ranks third in the ACC at 17.7 points per game.

“I’m not worried about coaching against coach Williams,” Turgeon said. “It’s more about Harrison Barnes and all those studs they run out there on the floor.”

Barnes, however, sprained his left ankle against Wake Forest on Tuesday night. He is questionable for Saturday’s game after being limited in practice Friday afternoon.

Before Friday’s practice, Williams said of Barnes, “I won’t know everything until after practice today, and I shouldn’t say ‘everything,’ because if it swells up again after practice, I won’t know that until late after we get up to Maryland.”

This much Williams does know: Hiring Turgeon back in 1988 was as logical as turning off the lights before bedtime.

“I thought it would be great for our program, and he was phenomenal,” Williams said. “I’m telling you, it was one of the luckiest and best decisions that I had ever made in my life.”

Turgeon played for Larry Brown at Kansas and served under Brown for one season before being hired by Williams. Part of Turgeon’s responsibility was overseeing the junior varsity, and early on it did not go well.

“I lost a game I didn’t think we should. I was young and took everything hard at that time,” Turgeon recalled. “I remember calling coach Williams after the game and saying, ‘I don’t know ifI’m going to be any good at this. I’m not you and I’m not Larry Brown.’

“Right then he said, ‘That’s your problem. You’ve got to be Mark Turgeon. That’s always been good enough.’ So, I think from that conversation on I’ve always tried to be me, and take what great coaches taught me.”

Turgeon went on hold the top job at Jacksonville State, Wichita State and Texas A&M before coming to Maryland to replace Gary Williams, who retired in May after 22 seasons.

It’s been a bumpy ride for Turgeon at Maryland, but he’s done a very good job with a roster that includes only two seniors. The Terrapins have forged a winning record and stand in the middle of the pack in the ACC, but there’s still one thing missing — a victory that would attract some national attention.

Senior guard Sean Mosley, who sits 12 points short of 1,000 for his career, would be delighted to achieve the personal milestone Saturday. But that’s secondary to his real goal.

“If it happens it happens, if it don’t, it don’t,” he said. “I just want to give my best effort that I can and try to get a signature win at home and try to improve our chances to make the (NCAA) tournament.”

Roy Williams knows better than to think that Turgeon won’t have the Terps ready to go, even though Maryland is still recovering from a double-overtime loss at Miami on Wednesday.

“He’s put together a really good team,” Roy Williams said of his former assistant. “He’s got them in the middle of the league right now, they just need to get on a run. I just hope they don’t start it with us.”

Although the Terrapins are coming off a loss, they have reason to feel good about their performance at Miami. After Turgeon was ejected in the second half for vehemently arguing a call, Maryland overcame a 16-point deficit to force overtime. Turgeon got updates in the locker room through a phone call with his wife.

“It was another step for us,” Turgeon said. “It was a lot of energy and effort put in. I could tell my guys were proud about what they did. They got some confidence out of it. That’s huge for our program, where we are right now.”

A win over North Carolina would mean even more.

And guess what? Turgeon doesn’t want to face Williams, and the feeling is mutual.

“He’s part family. I really am going to have some bad thoughts about competing against him, there’s no question,” said Williams, who fell back into mentor mode during a chat with Turgeon after that Miami game.

“I was calling him because I was concerned about him,” Williams said. “I didn’t want him beating himself up over the game the other night when he had the technicals and he was tossed and they lose in overtime, because we as coaches have a tendency to think we are more important than we really are.”

Torbit’s family, at times at odds with the city, is thankful but paid particular attention
when the mayor spoke about the death investigation.

“The panel’s recommendations are guiding us to improve training for our officers,” Baltimore’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

Just last week, new training and internal affairs directors were announced, brought to Baltimore from the outside to make sure another officer doesn’t die like Torbit did.

“We are grateful that the changes are going to affect Baltimore in his honor, and that’s great, but we do want someone to come to us and really tell us why they felt it was necessary to put over 22 bullets in one human being,” Tiffany Clark, Officer Torbit’s sister, said.

Until that happens, a grateful city pays tribute to a man who gave his life while on duty serving his city.

The commissioner was unable to attend Friday’s dedication as he was at a chiefs of police convention in Las Vegas.

Gigi Barnett reports he is accused of sexually assaulting one of his students.

Forty-seven-year-old Scott Spear coaches the girls’ track team at Richard Montgomery High School.

On Thursday, police arrested and charged him with fourth-degree sex offense against one of his students– a 16-year-old girl.

“If she had been younger, like 14 or 15 years of age, it would have been bumped up to a third-degree sex offense,” an officer with the Montgomery County Police Department said.

Last month, police say the county’s Family Crimes Unit received an anonymous tip that a 16-year-old student at the school had engaged in sexual intercourse with Spear.

The tipster told detectives that the abuse may have occurred back in April or May, when Spear allegedly contacted the student and took her to a house in Rockville where he assaulted her twice.

Reaction at the school is mixed.

“I don’t really want to believe all of the gossip that’s going around before it’s proven,” Samantha Brown, a Richard Montgomery High student, said.

“I am actually shocked. He was actually my teacher in the 8th grade. I didn’t expect this to happen.”

Police say Spear was the student’s track coach at Montgomery High School and was also one of her 8th grade middle school teachers.

“I don’t think he did it.”

Brian Stetter says Spear was his 8th grade History teacher at Julius West Middle School.

“He just doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy.”

Meanwhile, Spear faces fourth-degree sex offense, one for each time he allegedly assaulted the 16-year-old.

Spear has been in the school system for 24 years.

Ron Matz reports for one Baltimore landmark it will be the busiest day of the year.

The phones are ringing at Attman’s Delicatessen. Party platters and more will be the order of the day for Super Bowl Sunday.

“This is the Super Bowl. No matter what you say. Maybe some people might go to the movies, but it’s a great event. It’s like Thanksgiving almost. Friends and family are together. People travel to be with their family, and when people are together you know what they like to do: talk and eat,” said Marc Attman, owner of Attman’s Delicatessen.

Attman’s will sell 3,000 pounds of corned beef on Sunday and lots of hot dogs, too.

“They do everything for Super Bowl. Our biggest thing is pounds of corned beef and pounds of pastrami. Our corned beef is the best, and I’m not just saying that,” said James Holloway, who has worked at Attman’s Delicatessen for 32 years.

Lines will form inside, and delivery trucks will hit the road.

“It’s a whole big weekend. We’ll start preparing today. Saturday is huge and Sunday is like a barrage in here. We have eight or nine trucks delivering all our food around the city, Howard County and even D.C.,” Attman said.

Grab a pickle and some chips–super size it, too.

“The Lombard Trophy is our classic: corned beef, roast beef, turkey, imported Swiss, lettuce, tomato on a loaf of rye bread and serves five people,” Attman said. “We give you coleslaw, a pickle assortment and a container of our famous Attman’s mustard. It’s $39.95, and it’s our big seller, and we only do it for the Super Bowl.”

It’s a sweet way to enjoy the big game.

“It’s very busy Sunday. Everybody is so hyped up regardless of who’s playing. It’s like Christmas to people. It’s just a big day,” Holloway said.

“If the Ravens were in the Super Bowl it’s probably maybe double the business we’ll do Sunday,” Attman said. “We experienced it 10 years ago. It was a like a two-week party from when they won the AFC Championship to the Super Bowl.”

The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans will spend $11 billion celebrating Super Bowl Sunday, and an estimated 7 million people will call in sick on Monday.

At the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, a ceremony honoring the deployment of the Maryland Army National Guard’s Aviation Brigade.

“The soldiers of Charlie company first of the 169th have made a commitment and they stand strong to protect you and this great nation,” Capt. Theresa Parrotta of the Maryland National Guard said.

Forty Maryland troops will spend the next year overseas providing aerial medical coverage in the southern region of Afghanistan.

“We are a Medivac company, so basically we will be transporting any wounded civilian and military as well,” Capt. Parrotta said.

“Today this unit joins hundreds of other Maryland guardsmen, serving around the world, serving in places like the Horn of Africa, the Sinai [Peninsula], Kuwait and Afghanistan,” Gen. James Adkins said.

Their deployment comes just two days after Defense Secretary Leon Panetta suggested the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan would end in 2013– the first time Washington has discussed a possible deadline.

“Within that timeline, the transition will take place. It is already started in some areas of Afghanistan and U.S. troops are already coming home, as you know,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

But in Elkridge, family and friends say goodbye as these troops prepare to spend the next year in Afghanistan.

“I am humbled by your courage, I’m humbled by your dedication. I’m humbled by your commitment and your willingness,” Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said. “Yours is a courageous service of love in action.”

There are currently about 90,000 American troops stationed in Afghanistan.

The U.S. entered Afghanistan in 2001, following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Alex DeMetrick reports a fish that has survived mass extinctions may not survive man.

The University of Maryland’s Environmental Research Center is one of the few places you can see Atlantic sturgeon. For the past decade it’s been trying to keep the species alive, after a very long run in the wild.

“They pretty much haven’t changed since the Jurassic period when dinosaurs were around,” said Angie Hengst, UM research assistant.

But numbers have gotten so low, the federal government has declared Atlantic sturgeon endangered.  The university’s supply comes from watermen who catch a handful each year in the bay, but aren’t allowed to keep.

Nearly all are young, and that’s hard for a program hoping to breed more.

“They are not easy to breed. The main issue is because they mature so late.  You know we get these smaller sturgeon that might be only a few years old, and it might be 10 years before they mature,” said Erin Markin, UM research assistant.

It’s just one part of their prehistoric nature.

“It’s a tube mouth.  It comes down and sucks up food. It has no teeth.  Inside their mouth are two hard plates: one on the top and one on the bottom.  That just crushes food,” said Hengst.

And it’s as food that trouble started for sturgeon.  The pressure on these fish began a century ago, when demand for their eggs for the caviar trade exploded.

“When they’re collecting, they actually have to sacrifice fish to get the eggs, so the females are killed in order to collect the caviar.  So it’s removing a lot of fish from the population,” said Markin.

At the same time pollution in the bay was increasing, further pressuring reproduction for a very slow breeder.

Despite nearly a decade of trying, the University of Maryland has yet to successfully breed more sturgeon.

We don’t have a lot of details as to who this young man is yet, but uploader “bethchich” says it’s her two-year-old son.

Mary Bubala reports a crush of media is expected to descend on Charlottesville for the George Huguely murder trial.

“It’s attention to a trial by the national media that we haven’t seen here before,” said Rick Barrick, Charlottesville spokesperson.

Streets around the courthouse will be closed off next week for news vans. But just like in Maryland, there are no cameras allowed in Virginia courtrooms.

The first three rows are reserved for family and friends of the victim and the suspect.

Huguely, 24, is from Chevy Chase, Md. His family maintains he’s innocent.

Love, 22, grew up in Cockeysville and attended Notre Dame Prep.

The lacrosse players were dating at the University of Virginia when she was killed.

Huguely admits he kicked down the door to Love’s off campus apartment and shook her as her head repeatedly hit the wall.

But his defense team says Huguely didn’t intend to kill her.

“George Huguely only learned that Yeardley Love had died when he was told that by a detective,” said Rhonda Quagliana, defense attorney.

The jury will hear that defense along with his lacrosse teammates, describing him as very drunk the night Love died.

They will also suggest Love could have fallen or that Adderall found in her system actually killed her.

“You are probably not going to persuade the jury to find not guilty, so if you are on the defense side, you want to do whatever you can to kind of lower the level of risk,” said Byron Warken, legal analyst.

Jury selection begins Monday.  Huguely has been locked up since the crime. He’s charged with first degree murder, which carries a possible life sentence if convicted.

Monique Griego has more on how Brady is working with Johns Hopkins to save the life of his childhood mentor.

Brady’s mentor is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. And is currently in a program at Johns Hopkins. The quarterback has since made it his mission to find a donor.

As the Brady prepares for the Super Bowl, the childhood mentor who helped get him there is fighting his own battle.

“He’s a special human being he’s just been a great friend,” Brady said of him.

Tom Martinez has been training Brady for more than 20 years. Now 68 years old, the coach is in need of life-saving kidney transplant and he’s come to Johns Hopkins for help.

“He came out and he was evalauated by our whole team,” Dr. Robert Montgomery at Johns Hopkins Hospital said.

Dr. Montgomery says there’s a long list of people waiting for transplants.

“It’s reached a crisis point in terms of there not being enough donors available.”

That’s where Brady’s star power comes in. Recently, the quarterback made a public plea for donors to come forward. He’s also posted a picture of Martinez on his Facebook page with a link to the website MatchingDonors.com.

“That focus, that attention on the problem on the crisis helps tremendously,” Dr. Montgomery said.

Out of the 80,000 people currently waiting for donors, only 20 percent will receive one this year. Thirty percent will die waiting.

Doctors say the attention Brady is bringing to the need for donors is invaluable.

“The plea could end up saving several other people in addition to Tom Martinez,” Dr. Montgomery said.

So far, 300 people have come forward wanting to be Martinez’s donor. Dr. Montgomery says those who don’t match can donate to others..

“Greater awareness, and on a micro level, more transplants for these individuals.”

Doctors say they’re currently screening possible donors for Martinez. And he could receive a transplant within the next few months.

The average person waits three to five years before a donor is found.

Metro says it will close its Rosslyn and Arlington Cemetery stations beginning Friday at 10 p.m. and continuing through the weekend. Shuttle buses will take passengers through the area. Metro says customers traveling through the area should expect to add 20 to 30 minutes to their travel time.

Metro will also be doing track work on the red line. As a result, red line trains will single track between Van Ness and Friendship Heights. Metro says passengers traveling through the area should allow 10 to 15 minutes of additional travel time.

The transit agency has been working to fix safety problems that go back years, including the replacement of all track circuits and the addition of special rails to prevent derailments. But Rob Troup, the assistant general manager of Metro’s infrastructure, tells The Washington Examiner that riders will still see some level of shutdowns and single tracking even once the work is completed.

The red line is Metro’s busiest and Troup says riders should see trains running on schedule more often once the work is completed.

Oliver Miller, who played for the Phoenix Suns and other teams in the 1990s, pleaded guilty in November to first-degree assault and carrying a handgun. According to prosecutors, Miller and his girlfriend’s brother argued at a cookout in Edgewater in April, and Miller later hit him repeatedly in the head with a gun. The man required 11 staples to close his wounds.

Deputy State’s Attorney Thomas Fleckenstein said a judge sentenced Miller on Friday to serve five years on the assault
charge but suspended all but a year of the sentence. He was sentenced to three years on the handgun charge with all but 30 days suspended.

Natural Resources Police said they found four watermen illegally diving for oysters Friday in the Little Choptank River.

Officers charged 36-year-old Bryan Grimes of Chester, 61-year-old Edward Grimes of Stevensville, 19-year-old Mason
Coursey of Centerville and 19-year-old Christopher Marvel of Grasonville with catching oysters for commercial purposes by diving in an area reserved for hand-tonging. Officers returned four bushels of oysters to the water.

About a half-hour later, police say officers found 42-year-old Nelson Goslin Jr. of Cambridge power dredging for oysters in Fishing Bay. Goslin is charged with possessing unculled and undersized oysters and power-dredging in a hand-tonging area. Three bushels of oysters were returned to the water.
