Police in Newport Beach issued an arrest warrant on February 27, 2008 for Scott Spiezio, third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, for a DUI. Spiezio, who played for the Anaheim Angels of Anaheim from 2000-2003, was charged with six counts stemming from an accident in December 2007. A 2004 BMW registered to Spiezio crashed into a curb and fence. He is officially charged with DUI, DUI with a blood alcohol of .08 or more, hit and run, assault and battery and aggravated assault. After fleeing the scene and returning home, police say Spiezio vomited in the home of a neighbor before assaulting him. Spiezio won’t say what substance he is battling, but last season he went to rehab for little more than a month. At the time, he told reporters, “I was out of control for a while. [But] I have learned a lot and I’m ready to start contributing in a good way now.” Spiezio signed with the Atlanta Braves and was sentenced to three years probation in April 2008.
