Set in Atlantic City during the Prohibition era, “Boardwalk Empire” grabbed 18 nominations including an outstanding supporting actress nod for Kelly Macdonald. The HBO show also received a nomination for outstanding drama series.

Glee
Chris Colfer of “Glee” grabbed the nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester in the series, is once again competing for supporting actress. The musical comedy series also scored three nominations for its guest actresses.

Friday Night Lights
Kyle Chandler (above) and Connie Britton from “Friday Night Lights” were nominated for the outstanding lead actor and actress awards for a drama series.

Game of Thrones
The new HBO series “Game of Thrones” was nominated for outstanding drama series against veteran shows like “Mad Men,” “Dexter,” “Friday Night Lights” and “The Good Wife.” Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister in the medieval fantasy series, received a nomination for outstanding support actor in a drama.

Mad Men
“Mad Men” Christina Hendricks was nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, Her co-star John Slattery was nominated for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series. The critically acclaimed show “Mad Men” grabbed a total of 19 nominations, leading all other series in the primetime television awards.

Mike & Molly
While announcing the Emmy nominations, Melissa McCarthy of “Mike & Molly” was surprised to receive a nod for leading actress in a comedy series.

Mildred Pierce
“Mildred Pierce,” the HBO miniseries starring Kate Winslet garnered 21 nominations, leading this year’s race for the Emmy awards. Winslet, who plays a divorced single mom in Depression-era California, won the nomination for outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or a movie.

Along with his co-stars Ed O’Neill, Eric Stonestreet, and Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson received a nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. The mockumentary style comedy was last year’s top comedy series.
