Released in the First World War during construction of the Kowloon reservoir, it was hoped that the monkeys would eat poisonous alkaloid plants surrounding the water which would otherwise contaminate the supply for humans. However, the poisonous strychnos plant is a natural food of the macaque, and the species is now widespread throughout the territory.
